The essence of measured restraint

Beautifully written story of an unfulfilled, joyless, life. Worth reading as a classic example of such a life and of the author's masterful ability to maintain the steady, unrelenting pace necessary to successfully evoke it. For me, I will remember it as a touchstone of these qualities.

The pace was so different from books being written today. Meditative and reflective, yet with a complex plot.
