Book 2 in the Watchers of the Throne series

A new day has dawned for the Imperium, but not everyone sees the light. The Custodian Guard and Sisters of Silence must battle not just Chaos, but those who do not share Regent Guilliman's vision....

Listen to it because:

See how enemies lurk everywhere in the Imperium - even on Terra itself - and discover how the Adeptus Custodes excel at rooting out the darkness that lurks on the Throneworld and bringing it to light.

The story:

As Guilliman, Regent of Terra, heads off to lead the Indomitus Crusade, he leaves behind a world still in turmoil, beset by cult activity. Stripped of its huge armies for the galactic offensive, recovery is precarious. The Custodians do what they can while keeping the Palace secure, and the Sisters of Silence rebuild their citadel on Luna. When the warship Phalanx returns, it seems that stability will at last be assured. However, as reconquest forces push out further into the slums, they come across signs that another mysterious foe is active. The truth dawns - not every enemy is corrupted by Chaos, for there are many on Terra who do not share Guilliman’s vision of a new order, and the prospect of a Terran civil war looms...

This was a particularly satisfying listen, just like its predecessor, for the insight into political aspects that were a little more nuanced than most. The three character rotation throughout the series has been enjoyable because all of the characters are believable within their capacities to act (or not). This book particularly had a satisfying denouement and the final sentence was wonderful.

Enjoyed the political aspects

These books need a movie adaptation, amazing characters, scenes, and brutal dynamics action. This is too good to leave on the page alone!!

Absolutely Awesome

Chris Wright has always been on the money when it comes to writing the custodis in my opinion. His writing really flushes the characters out and allows you to get a true point of view. Giving them substance that has not been in the books and more for a long time. Also giving some light to the sisters of Silence.

Even with a few stumbles sprinkle throughout the audiobook that was on point and the narrators really grab your attention and convey the tension and emotion throughout the book.

a very deep and grabbing story

great book for anyone interested in following the 40k narrative. well composed and well acted. hoping for another one in the series.

only downside i can think of is that it's too short.

Ideal balance of lore, action, dialogue & intrigue

it is nice to have a series like this that shows Terra in conflict after the great rift, highly recommend all the books by Chris wright!

A good book, that tells the story of the Imperium from the perspective of those who are indispensable to the inner workings of its birth world. My only issue is with the frequent usage of the word "Earth" when talking. The word was replaced with Terra, over 10,000 years ago. Earth is an almost completely unknown word in 40k, used only by antiquarians and very knowledgeable scholars. Having characters use it casually detracts from the story.

Terra, not Earth

You are kept at the edge, something just beyond your grasp. The constant conniving can be seen, yet you still don't know who is behind it. And then as it reaches fever pitch, everything comes crashing down and all the pieces come together.

In time, all the pieces fall into place.

It was the characters that drew me in, and I do not regret the happy time spent listening. This and the previous book were amazing, marred only by a somewhat unsatisfying ending. Loved the different narrators for each character.

Among the top Black Library books I've read

I like how they show the story through different points of view. The acting kept the story moving forward.

Enjoyable

Does a great job describing space marines and custodians from the standpoint of "baseline humans". After this I feel like I understand custodians a lot better too

One of the best ones
