This classic captures the endearing relationship between a man and his grandson as they fish and hunt the lakes and woods of North Carolina. All the while the Old Man acts as teacher and guide, passing on his wisdom and life experiences to the boy, who listens in rapt fascination.

The terminology suits the time period and some may find those terms “offensive” but frankly they are all terms of endearment filled with symbolic respect and community. The heart beat of this story is beneficial to all who read it and can glean its message of the value and elegance of multigenerational conveyance of wisdom for living, thriving and simply wringing out the simple joys of life.

Wonderful philosophical and impressionistic portrait of American outdoor tradition. Great book for any boy or man who has learned to love nature.

The reader is excellent. The story told through the eyes of the grandson about learning, ethics, ecology, politeness, and how to be a decent human through lessons of his grandfather while being taught to hunt and fish. An absolutely wonderful book. The story is set during the 1920s and 30s and there is casual racism and misogynistic comments that are a bit hard to stomach, but are unfortunately typical for the times.

Wonderful tale of a boy and his grandfather

Great stories. Unfortunately, the narrator incorrectly pronounced a few words and for me, that took away from the authenticity of the narration. I still would recommend.

Fond memories from being "the boy" now that I'm the "old man"
