What if marriage was the law? Dare you disobey? Black Mirror meets thriller with a dash of Naomi Alderman’s The Power in this dark, high-concept novel by the bestselling author of The One.

Britain. The near-future. A right-wing government believes it has the answer to society’s ills—the Sanctity of Marriage Act, which actively encourages marriage as the norm, punishing those who choose to remain single.

But four couples are about to discover just how impossible relationships can be when the government is monitoring every aspect of our personal lives—monitoring every word, every minor disagreement…and will use every tool in its arsenal to ensure everyone will love, honor and obey.

“The king of near-future what-ifs is back with a smart and chilling page-turner. Twisty, unsettling, scarily believable and thought provoking, this is his best yet.” —Ellery Lloyd, author of The Club

“Clever, compelling and terrifyingly plausible. A near future nightmare that grips from the first page and never lets go. THE MARRIAGE ACT is a brilliant examination of relationships and the power we let others have over us. And talk about a page-turner. This one will leave you with paper cuts!” —C. J. Tudor, author of The Chalk Man

John Marrs is currently my go to author. I had high expectations for The Marriage Act based on his previous books. It didn’t let me down. The Marriage Act had me hooked from the beginning and threw curveballs every time I believed I had a grip on the moment. Love it.

John Marrs does it again

I was off kilter not for me at first, then got to know characters… then got scared of premise b/c of today’s fast moving technology… then rooting for characters.

It was a love - hate for me

John Marrs continues to amaze me with his books. They are more frightening than horror novels because they are so realistic. I love all the books I’ve read of his so far. This one may be my favorite.

Wow!

As a fan of John Marrs books, I looked forward to reading this one and was not disappointed! His ideas are brilliant & (scarily enough) don’t seem very far-fetched at all. Hopefully this one isn’t foretelling reality in the future! 5 stars, every one deserved.

Original, forward thinking and scary read!

It was good but the story seemed to difficult to follow. I didn’t find it flowed.

The idea of marriage

It was hard to get into, slow, drawn out and relatively boring. Great ending so pull together the connections but that was really it for me.

Great ending, meh otherwise.

This is my 2nd John Marrs book. He is a wonderful writer. AI is an interesting subject and Marrs explores how it can affect our future. I am definitely leery of self driving cars right now. The Audible presentation is more than someone just reading the book to you. There are sound effects and characters. I wish I had read the books in order even though they can be stand alone books.

Amazing writing and content

Great read! Great characters and narration. Couldn’t stop listening, and so much of it is relevant right now. Scary.

I've listen to a string of mediocre audible books lately. I moved into this one forgetting how incredible John Marrs is. I LOVE his integration of his former stories and the evolution of our current technology. Both felt purposeful and creates this rich history/ current state of his fictional world. The character development was excellent and the weaving of stories throughout masterful. The execution of his dystopian ideas- from systemic challeneges down to smallest details were so thoroughly described they felt imminent in our real world. Having this many narrators can be a challenge to listen to, but in this case, each narrator nailed it. I devoured this book. Incredibly well done all around. Sad it ended!

John Marrs is brilliant.
