Shortlisted for the Anthony, Nebula, Edgar, Shamus, and Gold Dagger Awards, best-selling author James Sallis is a master of the gritty crime drama. The Killer Is Dying tracks the fortunes of three men of vastly different ages, backgrounds, and ambitions. Though they never meet, a hired killer on his last job, a burned out detective, and a young boy plagued by nightmares have their lives intersect in compelling ways in the scorching metropolis of Phoenix, Arizona.

This book has multiple players designed to lead you into a rather complicated dark tale of murder and sick activates. Clearly the intent is to educate the listener into what makes them tick. The chapters are people thinking to themselves about what they are doing and reliving their childhood and upbringing. The reader does a poor job in differentiating vocally between characters, so if you are distracted far a moment, you may not know which character is talking.
To make matters worse, the story line drones on and on about sick dark thoughts and abusive pasts long after they are needed to enhance the plot.
In fairness, there is a twist at the end but it comes too late in the book and is not particularly imaginative; namely, are there even worse killers still roaming our streets?
