Acerca de esta escucha
The compelling new book by Richard Shotton, author of The Choice Factory.
Every day, people make hundreds of choices.
Many of these are commercial: What shampoo to pick? How much to spend on a bottle of wine? Whether to renew a subscription.
These choices might appear to be freely made, but psychologists have shown that subtle changes in the way products are positioned, promoted, and marketed can radically alter how customers behave.
The Illusion of Choice identifies the 16½ most important psychological biases that everyone in business needs to be aware of today–and shows how any business can take advantage of these to win customers, retain customers, and sell more.
Richard Shotton, author of the acclaimed The Choice Factory, draws on academic research, previous ad campaigns, and his own original field studies to create a fascinating and highly practical guide that focuses on the point where marketing meets the mind of the customer.
You’ll learn to take advantage of the peak end rule, the power of precision, the wisdom of wit–and much, much more.
You simply cannot afford to miss The Illusion of Choice.

How do master storytellers compel us? There have been many attempts to understand what makes a good story, but few have used a scientific approach. In The Science of Storytelling, Will Storr applies dazzling psychological research and cutting-edge neuroscience to our myths and archetypes to show how we can tell better stories, revealing, among other things, how storytellers - and also our brains - create worlds by being attuned to moments of unexpected change.

Misinformation affects all of us on a daily basis—from social media to larger political challenges, from casual conversations in supermarkets, to even our closest relationships. While we recognize the dangers that misinformation poses, the problem is complex—far beyond what policing social media alone can achieve—and too often our limited solutions are shaped by partisan politics and individual interpretations of truth. In Misbelief, preeminent social scientist Dan Ariely argues that to understand the irrational appeal of misinformation, we must first understand the behavior of “misbelief”.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Every investment plan under the sun is, at best, an informed speculation of what may happen in the future, based on a systematic extrapolation from the known past. Same as Ever reverses the process, inviting us to identify the many things that never, ever change. With his usual elan, Morgan Housel presents a master class on optimizing risk, seizing opportunity, and living your best life. Through a sequence of engaging stories and pithy examples, he shows how we can use our newfound grasp of the unchanging to see around corners.

You might believe you’re thinking clearly in the moments that matter most. But in all likelihood, when the pressure is on, you won’t be thinking at all. And your subsequent actions will inevitably move you further from the results you ultimately seek—love, belonging, success, wealth, victory. According to Farnam Street founder Shane Parrish, we must get better at recognizing these opportunities for what they are, and deploying our cognitive ability in order to achieve the life we want.

Why is Red Bull so popular, though everyone—everyone!—hates the taste? Humans are, in a word, irrational, basing decisions as much on subtle external signals (that little blue can) as on objective qualities (flavor, price, quality). The surrounding world, meanwhile, is irreducibly complex and random. This means future success can’t be projected on any accounting spreadsheet. To strike gold, you must master the dark art and curious science of conjuring irresistible ideas: alchemy.

Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

Ever notice that all watch ads show 10:10 as the time? Or that all fast-food restaurants use red or yellow in their logos? Or that certain stores are always having a sale? You may not be aware of these details, yet they’ve been influencing you all along. Every time you purchase, swipe, or click, marketers are able to more accurately predict your behavior. These days, brands know more about you than you know about yourself. Blindsight is here to change that.

Everyone has something they want to change. Marketers want to change their customers' minds and leaders want to change organizations. Start-ups want to change industries and nonprofits want to change the world. But change is hard. Often, we persuade and pressure and push, but nothing moves. Could there be a better way? This book takes a different approach. Successful change agents know it's not about pushing harder, or providing more information, it's about being a catalyst.

Each chapter stars plants and animals alike, underscoring how the interactions between species have helped shape the world we call home. As the chapters move upwards in time, Black guides listeners along the burgeoning trunk of the Tree of Life, stopping to appreciate branches of an evolutionary story that links the world we know with one we can only just perceive now through the silent stone, from ancient roots to the present.

Why do some products capture our attention, while others flop? What makes us engage with certain products out of habit? Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us? This audiobook introduces listeners to the "Hooked Model", a four-step process companies use to build customer habits. Through consecutive cycles through the hook, successful products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back repeatedly - without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging.

Supported by data
It was an excellent listen with a lot of good information. The author did a great job of presenting what on the surface seem like conflicting ideas but introduces data to help explain the nuances and application. I’m not a marketer but I learned a few things from this book.

Insightful
This book contains a good collection of seemingly forgotten tips and tricks for marketing that can pretty easily be applied to other fields.
The reasons why these methods are effective are only explored at a surface level which is unfortunate but does not detract from the book too much.

Why everyone needs to read (or listen) to this book
The way that we make choices, and the way that we want to encourage others to make certain choices, is something that we largely do on autopilot countless times every day.
In this fascinating book, Richard Shotton does an informative and entertaining job of describing the psychology behind some of the most important quirks of human thinking that relate to choice making.
If you’re in business, or lead people (or want to), this is a super handy guide. I’ve liked it so much that I’ve bought the audiobook to listen to while traveling, and also the paperback to make notes in and go back to.

The choices; do we really have em?
It was a quick listen to help you market. Period. Psychological aspect of why we buy what we buy. It has nothing to do with, our own thoughts!

Not much to say
Well, I haven’t much to say about this book other than it wasn’t down my alley and for me it was a waste of money.
However it might be worthwhile for small business owners or people who are new into promotion.
