A serial killer is abducting, torturing, and murdering young women in a small community in central Maine. Seeming to select his victims at random, he acts out the rituals of the Spanish Inquisition before committing their bodies to the sacred waters of nearby Sebec Lake.

Anne Quinn, an investigator for the Piscataquis County sheriff's office, and Detective Douglas Bateman with the Major Crimes Unit of the Maine State Police join forces in tracking him down. Hiding in plain sight, the killer is clearly from the local community and plays a deadly "catch me if you can" game with Quinn and Bateman. He seems determined to humiliate them and demonstrate his superior intellect, leading them to suspect that perhaps there is a deeper motive and purpose behind his string of murders.

Could have been better

Robotic narration detracted from story, which was actually pretty good. Didn't read the book, but stilted text may have been part of the problem. Normal conversation is not so precise, includes contractions.

Good sounding story overall

The story (what I could slog through of it) sounded like a good story. However the narrator/reader was closer to a text-to-speech reader than an actual voice talent. No inflections of any kind, like a 5th grade English teacher. I will have to read the book directly to see if the story is as good as it started out at a later date.

Solid, fast-paced police procedural, unpleasant narration

This was surprisingly good. While some reviewers disliked the attention to details, I appreciated it and helped me visualize the story and the characters, and I liked them. Like others, I thought the narration was robotic and nearly ruined enjoying this damn good story. Seeing that the narrator has changed for book #2, I'm excited to dive in.

This is a dam good story. Half way through I stop and purchased the next two books in this series.

Worst narrator ever!

I struggled listening to this book. It was like a child was reading it. I finally gave up and read it. Skip the audible and buy the book!

DOVER-FOXCROFT MAINE, WHAT?

Ok, seriously. If you grew up in D-F or are familiar with the area you MUST listen to the authors around town familiarity. I got homesick, and pictured people I knew around town when characters showed up.
But, do not expect the narrator to sound like a "townie" or even a Maine native. The author talks about Center Theater so much, he should have used that venue to look for a local to do this audiobook justice.
I found only 2 small slips, one that made me laugh and the other gave me a time frame for the authors knowledge of businesses in D-F. Apparently, I went to the Congressional Church growing up, belly laughs for at least 5 minutes. As for Center Theater Coffee being the first coffee place in D-F, actually in the mid 90's there was one run by my brother Jerrod. They actually even roasted their own coffee.
Butterfield's (the home of the world's best Grapenut Ice Cream), Judkin's, or Mountain's may never be mentioned. A cringing feeling may arise everytime the author calls the Academy a High School, ugh. This book is a must listen/read for anyone familiar with the region.

Great story - Horrible narration

Narrator doesn't change his voice at all, I felt like Ben Stein was reading to me. I will recommend the actual book and an ebook but not the Audible version.

This story would make a great movie!

Not sure

If I loved the story or because it was all about my hometown or because it was a really good story! I knew every place but there were so twist I didn’t expect!

terrible narration

although the story was fairly good, the narration was terrible. sounded like he was reading line by line from a textbook.
