Winter begins to understand why as he slowly uncovers crimes and unsavory behavior that had been ignored long before the killings, and in the process grows increasingly determined to find the real killer and expose the rot beneath the town's sanitized façade. And as the inquiry brings all-too-familiar sins to the surface, he'll have to confront his own inner demons once and for all.

Loved this book. Kept me wondering whodunit till the end. The characters are great and the story kept me going. Audio listened through the whole day! Hated when I had to pause.

Klavan knows how to tell a story that is believable and compelling. The themes are taken from today's news, and woven into a story that drives you forward in a way you can't resist.

Hot Gandalf has done it again with yet another masterpiece of a book. The New York Times should be ashamed of itself for not adding this great book to their bestseller list.

These books are MAGNIFICENT!!!

Klavan’s Cameron Winter mystery series is probably the best work he has ever done. What could easily be one and done forgettable detective tales Klavan turns into gripping mysteries through the use of excellent characters, clever twists, and deep themes that transcend the story. (If you want a sneak peak about where this series is going philosophically, read Klavan’s ‘The Truth and Beauty’) The House of Love and Death is equal parts tragedy and mystery. You will mourn over the loss of innocence, puzzle through the well crafted story, and learn even more about Cameron Winter than you did before. The biggest downside to this whole thing is that book four isn’t out yet! An easy five out of five stars!

Wow, hell of a book Cameron Winters is one of my favorite characters of all time

at great story well told. could not put it down. The plot pulls you in but the descriptive prose is amazing. it makes the story like you are there.

Built on previous novels, this is the best Cameron Winters novel yet

I suppose I should have seen it before, but i realized, while listening to The House of Love and Death, that Mr Klavan has set up the perfect way to write a great novel while slipping in some profound thoughts on the human condition. And he has some very profound insights that are shared here. You may recognize them from Klavan's non-fiction work on English the poets, The Truth and Beauty. He grabbed onto these insights, made them integral to the story, and gave each reader a reason to ponder on their own life. It made for a doubly meaningful story.
The story is engrossing. It isn't particularly fast-paced, but it moves along without letting you realize that it isn't fast paced. Everything has a purpose. Cameron Winter is a deeply troubled man, seeking redemption, and the story is as much about him as it is about the murders. It is beautifully told, and leaves you wanting more. The narrator is wonderful, giving character and feeling to each different character in the novel, and narrating so smoothly that he let's you focus entirely on the story, dropping into it.
Great novel. I highly recommend it.
