This is one secret he’s keeping to himself. And who would believe him anyway?

Farin, the gravedigger’s son, lives in the medieval village of Heap. The 18-year-old is an outsider who is bullied and ostracized by the villagers. His father has succumbed to a life of drinking, and the young man has no option but to take over the job of gravedigger.

But Farin’s life takes a dramatic twist when the village witch dies. As he prepares her for burial, he finds an amulet hanging around her neck, and he can’t resist trying it on....

Hook line & sinker

This story caught me hook line & sinker. I enjoyed getting invested in the characters. There is struggle, intrigue and mystery wrapped up in these characters. I'm looking forward to the next book.

The Gravedigger's Son is a riot!

I loved this book! It is snarky riot of sarcasm, wit, and humbleness. Bravo, bravo, bravo!

Loved the performance

Enjoyed the story lines as well, but there are two and they are distinct. I assume they will conjoin at some point in future books. I will keep listening to the series.

The narrator is fabulous

And he honestly holds my interest in this fairly complicated novel with his various voices, intonation, etc! I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Original and entertaining YA fantasy

I reserve 5 star reviews for masterpieces like Lord of the Rings. This isn’t quite up to that level, but it is original and has a lot of humor. It was a fun and fast read.

The main character, Farin, is the son of the local gravedigger in a medieval village known as Heap. His profession, as well as his father’s status as the village drunk, makes him a social pariah.

After stealing a magic amulet off a corpse he is preparing for burial, Farin becomes possessed by a demon, which he nicknames Stinky. The demon calls him Worm, and is always nagging him to act more like a man.

When Farin, with assistance from Stinky, defeats some local bullies who attack him, he comes to the attention of a powerful knight, who makes him his squire. Farin hopes to use the arcane books in the knight’s library to free himself from the deon, whom he experiences as a mocking voice in his head.

Meanwhile, the female lead, Aross, escapes from an orphanage headed by a cruel matron, only to run afoul of the local bishop, who suspects her of witchcraft. Aross’ main talent, besides eluding the authorities, is an ability to communicate with rats.

The two storylines run on parallel tracks in the first book, with emphasis on Farin’s. I’m hoping, as the title implies, that the two main characters eventually meet and form an alliance in future books.

There are scenes of violence and strong language that make this not a series for young children. I recommend it for age 13+.

This is book 1 of a 4 book series. I’m looking forward to Book 2 with anticipation.

Enjoyable

Honestly loved this story. It got me hooked up front and I loved the humble hero and heroine. Unlucky individuals who find themselves in situations where they need to reluctantly step up. I really loved the waif girl. Her reticence about her involvement was frustrating but built the character beyond the first volume.
