Resumen del Editor

Miami attorney Jack Swyteck lands in the heart of the contentious immigration debate when he takes on the heart-wrenching case of an undocumented immigrant who fled to America to protect her daughter and save herself, in this timely and pulse-pounding thriller that explores the stories behind the headlines from New York Times best-selling author James Grippando, winner of the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction.

Julia Rodriguez and her teenage daughter, Beatriz, escaped bloodthirsty gangs, random violence, and Julia's abusive husband back in El Salvador. Arriving in Miami, mother and daughter struggled to carve their own piece of the American dream. While life in the States is hard, it is safer, until Julia rejects her boss' unwanted sexual advances. Suddenly - thanks to an "anonymous" tip to US immigration authorities - she is arrested, locked in detention with criminals, and slated for deportation. Jack's only viable legal move to save her is asylum - a long shot that’s become nearly impossible in today’s charged political climate.

When Julia and Beatriz made the perilous trek north to freedom, they thought they’d left the danger behind them. But now, even Miami isn’t safe. A ruthless enemy may have tracked them to South Florida and is biding time, patiently waiting to strike.

In a case where the stakes have never been higher, Jack Sywteck may not be able to save his client - even if he wins.

Not my favorite Swyteck story

The story was timely, but it just didnt grab me like other Swyteck stories have. Not bad, just not great.

Weak heroines and heroes.

Predictable and stereotype characters.
Struggled to finish. Not up to Gripando's other books. Credit and time wasted.

Score! My first (but *not* last) James Grippando

Intelligent, empathetic author creates vividly three-dimensional relatable characters, reveals human flaws, frightens the hell out of me, makes me laugh, and does not seem to feel the need to indulge this reader/listener with "happily ever afters". Great stuff. Real. Solid narration, too. I'm addicted, now. 👍🏼

A “Maz…ingly” Entertaing

I have several books in the offing calling to me to listen to, but this one would not release me from its spell. The main character, an attorney, is smart and relatable. He cares about his client and knows first-hand what it is like to be torn away from loved ones (his Cuban grandmother had to leave the island and her mother, when Fidel came to power).
I recommend this book as it is not only entertaining, but also topical.

What happened to the ending

Terrible ending- talk about leaving reader hanging. Very frustrating not knowing what happens to main character.

This Story Kept Me Engaged 100%

I listen to a lot of audible stories - I haven’t listened to this author before and was so pleasantly surprised! It’s a great story and I didn’t have to rewind to catch moments that were too boring to keep my attention. It totally kept my attention the whole time! Great narration too!

Heartbreaking

A vivid picture of what it really like to be an immigrant - a must read, especially for those who have little pity for people who seek asylum here in the US.

Generations of Desperation, What a Waste

Love narrator Mr Davis, my fave is Sandra Browns Mean Streak. Mr Davis Latino background enables him to switch from Latino based pronunciations back to English so flawlessly that you do concentrate so you do no miss his correct pronunciation of a name or word. I was at the Getty Museum,Ca, visiting an exhibit, and I shouted out that is Jonathan Davis guiding us through the South American artifacts!!!
I do use 1.25x speed to match the action.
I like the characters in this series, and love the addition of Riley and the Golden retriever, more please Mr Grippando, but author is very inconsistent for me so he is not an automatic download. Death In Live Oak was outstanding and a definite re listen.
This story is so current with the illegal emigrants and it just breaks your heart to listen to the desperation they live with!!
I for one can not stand to listen to the evil corruption, thuggish dialogue and horrible in justice in stories like this.
It is too well told and very well done, but you need a strong constitution. I am not talking about gore, but the terror these kinds of actions produces.
Were my comments of help?

Average

The story kept my interest, but I found the main character, Julia, to not be very sympathetic. She kept lying and refusing to provide information, which made her immigrant asylum case unlikely to succeed. In supposedly trying to protect her daughter, she made it more likely one or both of them would be deported back to El Salvador. Then the book ended with many issues unresolved. So, it was ok, but not great.
