On my 40th birthday, I stand before the mirror a mere shell of a person, waiting for life to slip away. To everyone I appear clean, tidy, and perhaps even happy, a skill I've perfected over the years. But behind my smile lies a lifetime of hidden pain.
This is the raw, emotional account of an innocent girl betrayed by those entrusted with her care. Lily’s family set her on a path of destruction, using and abusing her without ever truly wanting or loving her. The trauma she endured extended far beyond her family, she also suffered sexual, physical, and emotional abuse at the hands of others, all while hidden behind the façade of Ireland’s Catholic Church run institutions.
Childhood, You only get one chance to live your life as a child, but Lily was never given that chance as her childhood was taken from her before it ever begun. Her first chance to live, learn, and dream was cruelly snatched from her. From the age of four, when she first faced sexual abuse, her life spiraled down a dark path. Even as she stepped through the institution’s doors, her soul remained trapped by the same malevolence that haunted her.
Today, the emotional wounds persist, etched into her very being. “When I close my eyes, it’s there,” she whispers. “And when I wake, I see it in the mirror and I am only waiting to die.”
