Resumen del Editor

This book begins with a bold idea. Learning should be epic. Definition of epic:

1. A story or narrative centered around a hero

2. Spectacular; impressive; memorable

If learning is not memorable, should it even be considered learning? For too long, traditional education has used outdated practices to deliver complex and well-intended content to students with very little hope of that subject matter being retained. It often looks like this:

  • Lectures are given
  • Students write the information down
  • Students take a test on that information
  • Information is discarded from the brain
  • Repeat

It doesn't have to be this way anymore. In The Epic Classroom, Trevor Muir uses the power of storytelling and brain science to give educators practical and proven practices to achieve real student engagement, and in return, learning that is permanent and memorable. Any teacher, in any subject area, and in any grade level can use the story-centered framework of The Epic Classroom to transform their classrooms into settings where students are engaged, challenged, and transformed. Students can be heroes of their own learning; dynamic, capable, and daring characters working their way through a plot to solve real conflicts that can change their world. And classrooms are a setting for this adventure to take place; teachers being the guides to lead their students through this journey. In this book you will discover

  • How to increase student engagement
  • How to plan and execute an effective approach to project-based learning
  • Specific strategies for leading engaged students
  • Outlines and tools to plan and manage projects
  • Methods to increase academic performance in students

Inspiring!

I love the ideas presented in this book. The author is the reader, and brings a lot to the table to improve instruction through story-telling and PBL. While some of the ideas are somewhat intimidating, he admits that it would be easier to just lecture, test and move on. But, that's not real learning. He is a secondary history and English teacher, but still manages to provide some ideas for other subjects. I am a high school social studies teacher myself, so I can easily adopt his suggestions. I am not sure how difficult it would be to see the translation into other subjects because I'm not a master in math, science, etc. I look forward to future books by Trevor, and to hopefully attending some of his professional development. I will listen to this again periodically to see what might strike me for future unit plans.

Very student centered and practical!

I loved this book! Great and practical ideas that are meant to give kids a real-world perspective through story-based, PBL. I’ve been looking for a PBL based book that focuses more on giving meaningful, real-life experiences rather than project that solve hypothetical situations. The cherry on top is that it’s all centered to the needs of the kids.

Great

Awesome concepts of connecting with the students, showing that learning is choice, and is a lifelong condition that stays with you a life time.

PBL like nothing else!

Project based learning has become just another buzz word in the realm of education, but Trevor presents ideas that don’t just increase engagement, but impact our communities and change student lives. And no, it doesn’t mean you have to spend hours of your weekend and hundreds of your own dollars, it just means you allow your passion to shine through and remember we are here to teach students, not just standards.
