Historia
Tamsen Donner must be a witch. That is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the wagon train known as the Donner Party. Depleted rations, bitter quarrels, and the mysterious death of a little boy have driven the pioneers to the brink of madness. They cannot escape the feeling that someone—or something—is stalking them. Whether it was a curse from the beautiful Tamsen, the choice to follow an experimental route West, or just bad luck - the 90 men, women, and children of the Donner Party are at the brink of one of the deadliest adventures in history.

1944: As World War II rages on, the threat has come to the home front. In a remote corner of Idaho, Meiko Briggs and her daughter, Aiko, are desperate to return home. Following Meiko's husband's enlistment as an air force pilot in the Pacific months prior, Meiko and Aiko were taken from their home in Seattle and sent to one of the internment camps in the Midwest. It didn’t matter that Aiko was American-born: They were Japanese, and therefore considered a threat by the American government.

Germany, 1945. In the waning days of World War II, the Nazis have been all but defeated. Uwe Fuchs, never a fighter, feels fortunate to have avoided the front lines as he cared for his widowed mother. The war is lost, and rumor has it that Hans is a deserter. But Hans entices him with talk of power, brutality, and their village’s ancestral lore: werewolves.

Historia
Documentary filmmaker Alice Lindstedt has been obsessed with the vanishing residents of the old mining town, dubbed “The Lost Village”, since she was a little girl. In 1959, her grandmother’s entire family disappeared in this mysterious tragedy, and ever since, the unanswered questions surrounding the only two people who were left - a woman stoned to death in the town center and an abandoned newborn - have plagued her. She’s gathered a small crew of friends in the remote village to make a film about what really happened.

Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

That's about to change with the words any New Yorker would love to hear—affordable housing lottery. They've won an apartment in the Deptford, one of Manhattan's most revered buildings. Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Montserrat has always been overlooked. She’s a talented sound editor, but she’s left out of the boys’ club running the film industry in ’90s Mexico City. And she’s all but invisible to her best friend, Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, though she’s been in love with him since childhood. Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he can change their lives—even if his tale of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy.

As a sixteen-year-old, Tessa Cartwright was found in a Texas field, barely alive amid a scattering of bones, with only fragments of memory as to how she got there. Ever since, the press has pursued her as the lone surviving “Black-Eyed Susan”, the nickname given to the murder victims because of the yellow carpet of wildflowers that flourished above their shared grave. Tessa’s testimony about those tragic hours put a man on death row.

Resumen del Editor
From the acclaimed and award-winning author of The Hunger comes an eerie, psychological twist on one of the world's most renowned tragedies, the sinking of the Titanic and the ill-fated sail of its sister ship, the Britannic.
Someone, or something, is haunting the ship. Between mysterious disappearances and sudden deaths, the guests of the Titanic have found themselves suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone from the moment they set sail. Several of them, including maid Annie Hebley, guest Mark Fletcher, and millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, are convinced there's something sinister - almost otherwordly - afoot. But before they can locate the source of the danger, as the world knows, disaster strikes.
Years later, Annie, having survived that fateful night, has attempted to put her life back together. Working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic, newly refitted as a hospital ship, she happens across an unconscious Mark, now a soldier fighting in World War I. At first, Annie is thrilled and relieved to learn that he too survived the sinking, but soon, Mark's presence awakens deep-buried feelings and secrets, forcing her to reckon with the demons of her past - as they both discover that the terror may not yet be over.
Brilliantly combining the supernatural with the height of historical disaster, The Deep is an exploration of love and destiny, desire and innocence, and, above all, a quest to understand how our choices can lead us inexorably toward our doom.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"Clever and haunting...Katsu is a wordsmith using vivid imagery and beautiful wording to create a story that will leave you wishing there was more." (Suspense Magazine)
"A riveting, seductively menacing tale of love, loss, and betrayal set amid the glamour of the Titanic, filled with séances, sea witches, and second chances." (Library Journal starred review)
"Painstakingly researched and meticulously plotted.... Though readers will be aware of the inevitable tragedies awaiting, Katsu successfully injects suspense into both time lines, spinning a darkly captivating tale of hauntings, possessions, secrets, and class.... Katsu’s artful writing and calculated pacing keep the pages turning. This is an impressive, horror-tinged trip back in time." (Publishers Weekly)

As an orphaned child, she fled with her sister, Alice, from their charlatan aunt Bellefonte, who wanted only to exploit Tabby's gift so she could profit from the recent craze for seances. Now a young woman and tragically separated from Alice, Tabby works with her adopted father, Eli, the kind caretaker of a large Boston cemetery.

Jane Collingwood is FANTASTIC
The story was great, but what really sold it for me was the narration. Jane Collingwood is an incredible voice actor, and really brought each and every character to life. She clearly captures a wide range of accents, as well as voice qualities such as pitch, rasp, and volume. I can't recommend listening to her performance enough!

Interesting read
I really liked the historical links and the character development, but the ending seemed rushed. I was left wondering about the fates of some of the other characters.

More sad slice-of-life than horror
I had high hopes for this book after a friend of mine had read Katsu's The Hunger. A ghost story set aboard (or so I thought) the Titanic, how interesting!
There was very little ghost:ing going on during the first two thirds of the book and little of it made any sense until the final third. Personally, I don't enjoy when too little information is offered for so long, especially not when the "grand reveal" wasn't all that spectacular.
I've given the story a 3 star rating, but that is solely because I can't actually fault the storytelling. A lackluster.

Amazing storytelling
Alma Katsu is incredible. I will read anything she writes. The characters in her stories come to life.

absolutely loved this
not spooky, which I was happy about since I don't do scary stuff very well. But I love any stories about the Titanic and this was absolutely well written. Loved the characters ❤

Dark, mysterious, mind-bending
While you won't find Jack and Rose on this version of the Titanic, you will find a compelling story of love and identity that takes place in both 1912 and 1916. The author does an amazing job weaving two storylines to build suspense and intrigue while introducing a vivid cast of characters who face the supernatural side of one of history's most infamous tragedies.
The audiobook version was well worth it due to the narrator's fluid transition between accents and the overall strength of her delivery. Though the novel bounces back and forth in time, the various chapters were clearly distinguished, and I never had trouble following the story. Can't recommend this one enough.

meh...
It just wasn't for me. I love a good ghost story but this book reminds too much of The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw except this was 12 hours longer than that.

Ghosts of the Titanic
This reads more like a real life diary than fiction. Many of the people mentioned actually did exist. The use of drugs, alcohol, and a belief in superstition by the upper class fueled a strange aura that hung over the ship. As the story moves from the Titanic into the future four years later, the ghosts followed along.
