The Troop scared the hell out of me, and I couldn’t put it down. This is old-school horror at its best.” —Stephen King

Lord of the Flies meets 28 Days Later in this “grim microcosm of terror and desperation haunting” (Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author) following a scout troop on a terrifying fight for survival when they come across a mysterious—and deadly—stranger in the Canadian wilderness.

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry—Tim and the boys are exposed to something far more frightening than any tale of terror. The human carrier of a bioengineered nightmare. A horrifying contagion that spreads faster than fear. A harrowing struggle for survival with no escape from the elements, the infected…or one another.

Part parasitic horror, part survival thriller—and all-consuming—this tightly written, edge-of-your-seat thriller takes you deep into the heart of darkness, where fear feeds on sanity…and terror hungers for more.

So I'm not one to normally use profanity on an Amazon review, but I hope I have your attention now. This book is NOT for the week stomached, or week minded.
It's horror all right and when Stephen King said it scared the piss out of him oh he wasn't kidding. Not because of Monsters or Boogie Men and not because of Serial Killers or Mad Men but because of things you don't think of, at least not daily. All the same they are there, everyday, with us, within us, not just the proverbial "us" but actually within YOU! NO matter how many times you shower, how clean you think you keep your system, how healthy you eat, much you wash your hands. This truth is WHY this book terrified even Stephen King, and made Clive Barker tell nyt bsl i couldn't finish, and this is what my nightmare dream about. if your like me and thought you could never find an intellectual, engaging, captivating, book that also took you so far over the edges of horror, science, gore, that you're mind snaps line a twin into the ground from which same said twig once grew. This is your read.
But BE WARNED: when I say gore I'm not talking zombies chewing on intestines. I'm so far past the intensity and mental darkness of that concept it almost seems "rainbow bright" ish, and when I say mental twists and breaking you down into darkness beyond typical "dark" books *breath* *shallow laugh* I'm not talking incest, child molestation, rape, prostitution, enslavement, serial killing by genocidal governments. go. deep. er.

Well it goes without saying that if anything gets the seal of approval from Stephen King it’s going to be good. How good, I really wasn’t prepared for. I honestly cannot think of a horror novel that has gotten under my skin like this in some time. I’m honestly floored. I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this novel to absolutely anyone who loves a good body horror. This is my second listening of this feature and I plan to purchase any and everything written by Nick Cutter. Just amazing.

The Troop is an excellent horror story that will probably surprise you wit the direction it takes in the story. Certainly, one knows what sort of story one is in for when the author leads things off with a quotation from Lord of the Flies. But just wait and see what terrors await them on this weekend camping trip!
The writing is excellent - in fact, the description is so horribly visceral, you may have to take a break from time to time from the gore. The narrator was absolutely fantastic - sounded exactly like John Malkovich - who better to narrate this twisted tale?

Well written gore fest for horror fans

Some who've read this book might think the title of this review means that I was so disturbed after reading The Troop that I couldn't sleep. The truth is that the day before when I slected this tale and since began to listen, I couldn't bring myself to peel away from what I was hearing to break for my typical 8hr nightly slumber. Cutter and Brill had me spellbound and contained inside one of the most interesting well written stories I've ever read/heard. The wordplay is poetic considering the horrific content and the way Cutter spins it is artful and mesmerizing. I've read horror from King, Barker, Koontz and Hill. Never once until The Troop have I been so entranced, spooked and touched all at the same time!

Of course one expects to be scared, grossed out and disturbed when electing to partake of a horror novel. The Troop absolutely satisfies all of those expectations in gushes of oozing fun, however, this book really made me feel deeply for its characters. I never expected that by the ending final chapter I would actually be tearing up and saddened by the hopelessness and misfortune of the boys of troop 54, and of one in particular.

The Troop has a heart touching "Stand By Me" meets "Phantoms"/"World War Z"(without the zombies) meets "Alien"/what-does-that-even-mean type of vibe.

Nick Cutter is a wordsmith and a supreme storyteller. In the genre of horror he has no equal in my opinion. Although to categorize him as a horror writer takes much away from his talents and potential.

I didn't sleep a wink last night!

But at times can be slightly graphic... And gross. I did get kinda bored at the end and just wanted it to finally be over. 😑

Good....
