Introducing your new crime thriller fix: Bristol detective DS George Cross, champion of the outsider, the voiceless and the dispossessed.

DS George Cross can be rude, difficult, and awkward with people. But his unfailing logic and relentless pursuit of justice means his conviction rate is the best on the force. So when a ravaged body is found in a local demolition site, it's up to Cross to piece together the truth from whatever fragments he can find.

The demolition began at dawn. Walls knocked over. Twisted pipes uprooted. Window frames smashed. A dead body unearthed...

DS Cross has little to go on, but from the faint tan lines on the body, and strange scars on his forearms, an identity gradually emerges: a young man; an amateur cyclist; a supply of performance enhancing drugs. But what led this man to his death? Soon, Cross has mounted an investigation that will uncover jealousy, ambition and a family tearing itself apart... An investigation that could cost him his career.

Everything you might have liked about the first book, you will also find here. We have some character development to top things off, so definitely a good book to listen to.

Still very good

I love the unfolding of the working relationships and the realist value of learning to navigate Asperger’s

Such a good listen! Now that I understand DS Cross more, I really enjoy his character! I love how smart and detail oriented he is.

Loved this one!

DS Cross and his entire team, his father, and the local priest are in full form and getting better. The author paints each character so vividly I can see and hear them. As with the first book, the ending is more than expected. I had to hear this 3 or 4 times as well and have learned something new each time.

This detective is evolving as the series progresses but his discernment never falters. The crimes are believable and almost sad in their humanity. The stories are as well written as they are compelling and the reader’s voice was just right.

An unusual but believable detective!

Second in the Series, definitely as good as the first, and the narration is terrific...not to be missed!

Great book....

The author is back with my favorite characters: Detective Sergeant George Cross, a misunderstood, unconventional loner, and a stickler for details, his partner, Detective Sergeant Josie Ottey, who always has his back, and Alice Mackenzie, an investigator trainee who realizes that Cross’ peculiar ways are the least of her problems. The plot brings some new authentic, relatable, and complex characters, explanatory locations, which begins in Bristol, UK, and expands to Greece, more drama, twists, and turns, secrets and lies, drug misuse, and manipulation. This page-turning story will keep you guessing to the very end, a conclusion that I never saw coming. The relentless rapport between Cross and Ottey and how they conduct their awkward interviewing skills with suspects can be strenuous but at the same time humorous. I am looking forward to reading the third installment of the DS Cross Mysteries.
John Heffernan was fantastic with the delivery of the story

A Fascinating Whodunit

A great change from your typical murder mystery. I loved it that there weren’t 8 million people to try to keep track of, and that it was a true mystery, and not just a bloody who done it!

Excellent! Great series!

I finished the first DS Cross book yesterday morning. and had some furniture to build so I loaded up the second book and listened to all but an hour of it throughout the rest of the day.
I love Cross's character. he's written really well, and I see a lot of one of my friends in him.
I think I was a little disappointed that the story flow, while much shorter, was almost beat for beat, the same as the dentist. especially when it got to the end and cross is doing the interviews.
narrator is great.
I do have a complaint about the three spots where a sentence is repeated in the recording. kinda throws you out of the emersion.

almost as good
