In this audiobook, the frontman of one of the greatest bands of all time tells the story of his rise from nothing to rock 'n' roll megastar, and his wild journey as the voice of The Who.

“It’s taken me three years to unpack the events of my life, to remember who did what when and why, to separate the myths from the reality, to unravel what really happened at the Holiday Inn on Keith Moon’s 21st birthday,” says Roger Daltrey, the powerhouse vocalist of The Who.

The result of this introspection is a remarkable memoir, instantly captivating, funny and frank, chock-full of well-earned wisdom and one-of-kind anecdotes from a raucous life that spans a tumultuous time of change in Britain and America. Born during the air bombing of London in 1944, Daltrey fought his way (literally) through school and poverty and began to assemble the band that would become The Who while working at a sheet metal factory in 1961.

In Daltrey’s voice, the familiar stories - how they got into smashing up their kit, the infighting, Keith Moon’s antics - take on a new, intimate life. Also here is the creative journey through the unforgettable hits including "My Generation", "Substitute", and "Pinball Wizard" and the great albums Who’s Next, Tommy, and Quadrophenia.

Amidst all the music and mayhem, the drugs, the premature deaths, the ruined hotel rooms, Roger is our perfect narrator, remaining sober (relatively) and observant and determined to make The Who bigger and bigger. Not only his personal story, this is the definitive biography of The Who.

Loved the book and really enjoyed having Roger Daltrey do his own narration. Many interesting stories of his growing up in Post WW II England and his growing love of music. The multiple stories of the Who as a band, as well as accounts about the band mates was very compelling reading. A must read book for any Who or Rock and Roll afficianado.

An Enjoyable view inside The Who

Roger Daltrey is a great storyteller, and as the front man for The Who it feels like he’s the best person to tell it. There’s an urgency and honesty in his voice and his ability to craft a compelling narrative. As rough and authentic as Roger’s voice is however, there’s something that feels just a little too neat and sanitized about the tale, as if it were ready-made for a feature length biopic.

The timing of this book may in part be a response to Townshend’s biography ‘Who I Am’. Roger is critical of his band mates, but defends and redeems them, clearly loving and admiring Pete.

I appreciated seeing the insecurities and vulnerabilities of a man who, on stage, looked like he could never be beaten down. I’m grateful that Mr Daltrey has always gotten back up and that he tells such a good story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

My mother was watching ‘The Kids Are Alright’ and pointed at Roger and said, “He’s the responsible one.” At the time, I wondered how she’d concluded that. It was a pleasure to hear Roger read his story to us. There are plenty of surprises. I also sense there are several more books he could write, autobiographical or otherwise. He’s also got an engaging speaking voice.

Thank you, Mr. Daltrey

I listened to this after I listened to Pete Townsend's 'Who I Am." At least this book wasn't so self absorbed as to totally leave the Who out of it; Roger's southern English accent is exquisite, and he is a very good storyteller with some great bits in there about the Who - not just Roger. A must read for any Who fan!

Much Better than Pete Townsend's Book

ROGER DALTRY TELLS A GREAT STORY, NOT HOLDING ANYTHING BACK. THE MEMOIR PROVIDES INSIGHTFUL DEPICTIONS OF POST WAR ENGLAND AND THE 60s-70s ROCK AND ROLL MOVEMENT. DALTRY LIVED HIS LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND HAS PUT AS MUCH FORMIDABLE ENERGY INTO THE TELLING OF HIS STORY AS HE PUT INTO HIS ENERGETIC SINGING PERFORMANCES!
BRAVO FOR PRODUCING SUCH AN ENTERTAINING LISTEN!

MADE ME A FAN OF THE WHO!

Thank you Roger, what a great story your life has been. Thank you for sharing it with us. I have a whole new sense of admiration for Roger, I didn't know how difficult it was being in such a setting with the other bandmembers. And I love that even though he is a Rock Star he is just a regular bloke underneath it all. ;o)

EXCEPTIONAL!!!
