Now that I know what this author does, it makes sense why his first book is so entertaining. It kept moving, has very little gratuitous anything, and painted a really good picture. Knowing there will be another chapter in Jake’s life in 2026 is something to look forward to. I’m just wondering how long before there’s a series somewhere ….

Great book

This is such a fanatic book with great characters. It grabbed my attention from the start!!

Good start for characters intended to inhabit a series. Good story

Narrator useless for anyone but Jake.
Couldn’t produce an Irish accent for the female cop, or make discernible vocal distinctions for most characters.
Story would be enhanced by a much better reader.

worth the time

Enjoyable listen. Not a perfect story book story a bit closer to real life. At the same time the literary fiction used.

Varying Voices helped with understanding

The plot line was good and did carry a suits writing style. You can tell the book was written by a screen writer but this made the book that much more enjoyable and easy to visualize. The varying voices (same speaker) across the book made it easy to understand who was saying which lines when I might have needed to multitask listening to the book. I’d recommend this to anyone.

Narrator fail

The Irish character was indistinguishable from the others for the most part. Too little action and too much description of the protagonist’s angst and alcoholism.
