Murder. Arson. Secrets. Justice is about to come home.

Big-city defense lawyer Dean Lincoln left his picturesque hometown of Beaufort years ago. But now, the lure of small-town life and a family matter have drawn him back.

Amidst the sultry heat and the Spanish moss, and beneath the facade of Southern small-town charm, Lincoln begins work again and is immediately thrown into two cases: a rich kid charged with murder and a poor kid accused of arson. Both swear they are innocent. Both feel the system is trying to crush them. And in this corner of the South, guilt is rarely decided in the courtroom…

Lincoln’s return has stirred a long-standing grudge, and it could cost him everything—his career, his clients, even his life. As the clock runs out on the truth, trouble is closing in fast.

I enjoyed it, but didn’t think it was amazing. It was a bit slow, but still interesting and exciting enough to want to listen to the whole book. I think the story being slow also plays into how the story talks about life in their town is a slower pace, so it works.

Narrator: I give 5 stars. In general I just liked this narrator’s voice and the southern accent (not sure if it’s natural or not for this narrator). I thought he did a great job with Dean’s voice and I think it matched well with the character. I wasn’t a big fan of the narrator’s female voices, but I’m just not a fan of men speaking women’s parts in general.

A good follow up to the 1st book.

Chicago criminal lawyer returns to his hometown…but isn’t welcomed back with open arms. Dean Lincoln is on a one year sabbatical while his wife takes care of her ailing mom. He joins an older lawyer in representing two cases…and soon has a rude awakening…practicing law in Beaufort, SC is anything but normal. Lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing. Story is well paced with a great mix of legal drama and action. Narrator was perfect! Looking forward to the next book.

This was a good one. Paced well and the ending seemed well thought out and also didn’t drag. First read from this author/narrator and will be back for more!

Had me in suspense

I liked the book. At first I was questioning the 2 cases and subplots but each were fleshed out well and it allowed for a deeper connection with the characters. Dean is not the typical hero. No quirks, or massive ego, he is just honest, really smart and wants to do the right thing. It will be good to continue to get to know him in the next book.

Narration was good. At times it was difficult to distinguish which character was speaking. Some of that was on the narrator but also on the author. Overall it’s a good audio.

Good courtroom drama

For those that like John Grisham, this will be next on your go-to list. Fast paced legal thriller and great character development pulled together with perfect narration by Troy Duran. I binged both books in the series and looking forward to book three in 2026.

This is great start to a new series. Big city lawyer, Dean Lincoln and his wife move back to their small southern town to help his mother-in-law while she gets cancer treatments. They have made plans to stay a year. He isn't welcomed with open arms like his wife. The people have a distrust of the big city lawyer. Dean has two cases that don't seem winnable. But he keeps following clues to help his clients. The narration was great. I'm looking forward to more in this series.

Wonderful book

Like the family togetherness. Good story. Some repetition of lines was a writing device or editing error.

Book 1 of this new series. Peter O'Mahoney has done it again! This is another suspense filled murder mystery and intense court drama set in South Carolina. If you understand the South Carolina culture, you will definitely appreciate all the intricate details the author sprinkles through the drama. An absolute pleasure to read and experience this drama! Don't miss this fabulous reading/audio experience!

I found this story was really interesting. The characters all become real. You sympathize with some and get angry with others. The reader is perfect. I wish that there were lawyers in the real world like "the big city lawyer".

Great story!
