Resumen del Editor

First published in Portuguese in 1968, Pedagogy of the Oppressed was translated and published in English in 1970. Paulo Freire's work has helped to empower countless people throughout the world and has taken on special urgency in the United States and Western Europe, where the creation of a permanent underclass among the underprivileged and minorities in cities and urban centers is ongoing.

This 50th anniversary edition includes an updated introduction by Donaldo Macedo, a new afterword by Ira Shor, and interviews with Marina Aparicio Barberán, Noam Chomsky, Ramon Flecha, Gustavo Fischman, Ronald David Glass, Valerie Kinloch, Peter Mayo, Peter McLaren, and Margo Okazawa-Rey to inspire a new generation of educators, students, and general audiences for years to come.

This book has power

This book has power, while listening to this book, I actively felt as if I was a student relearning what pedagogy was for every aspect of life and consciousness. This book covers immense topics about liberation and the working class struggle against capitalism in institutions that claim to be educational. Although this book is a more broad and generalized reference on how to liberate one's mind, I have learned a lot about Brazil as well. Moreover, on top of learning more about South America, I learned so much about myself and the systems around me. Systems theory was coined here in the West, but the Global South was so much more sophisticated in their understanding of systems of oppression in all realms of thought, and Paulo places his understanding of the interconnectedness of systems of oppression perfectly. I found that a lot of the words and terms are complex so be sure to pay attention and use context clues or research the terms online using Paulo's references. Enjoy the book definitely worth a hard copy and a listen!

Thought provoking

It is a REALLY dense read. It would be more or less completely inaccessible to someone who didn’t have a university education. Which given his views seems a bit odd. But the material is certainly thought provoking. I enjoyed the introduction and the afterword as well. It was well worth reading. And I plan to read it again to see what I think after a second go round.

Focus on solutions

The focus on solutions and making the topics relevant to current society was fantastic. The educational approach presented as well as the context given to various class structures was enlightening.

Great read for education!

The idea that solving a problem invests the learner is not only applicable in oppression but education as well. Glad I took the time to listen.

beautiful and painful in it's analysis

any book which has been banned should pique your interest. the language can be a bit academic at times, but the overall analysis of education, liberation and revolution still holds truth and power today. Freire's liberatory perspective could benefit toward a shift of placement within the natural world of which we are a part and a more gender inclusive lens, but that's what dialogue is for!

A Radical Act of Love

Absolutely indispensable for anyone looking to raise the consciousness of others and themselves. Friere's methodology gets divorced from its radical basis all the time, but the whole purpose of this style of education is for teachers and students to work in tandem to become active subjects of society, rather than its unknowing victims. The animating force behind everything here is a profound and overwhelming love for human beings and an equally overwhelming desire to set them free. It's hard to imagine anybody going wrong by holding fast to the principles laid out in Friere's work.

Great read all around..

I really enjoyed the way the book outlines from beginning to end how oppressed people are created and maintained- as well as what we can do to help free ourselves and those around us. Great read for any who are looking to understand why the world works the way that it does and how that relates to those that live within it.

Excellent book and excellent commentary

This audible is very coherent and illustrative. I never got the chance to fully read the actual book. Listening to the audible left no stone unturned. I will certainly listen to this audible again and again.
