Forbidden & full of steam 🥵

This book took me by surprise. After hearing so much about this one, especially the audio performances, I dove head first and it did not disappoint. Yes, this is very much taboo & forbidden (*married man*) but this is such a complex story that takes a deeper look at love, commitment, betrayal, and happiness.

Chris & Marissa have the biggest uphill battles. After sleeping with Marissa at a mutual friend's wedding, he finds himself now her boss. They both haven't stopped thinking about their night but Marissa unwittingly slept with a married man. She has to come to terms with her situation. Chris decides it's time to leave his wife and marriage and starts this affair with Marissa under that he will be divorced but challenges arise, especially with Marissa working for him and the emotional toll it takes on both of them to have them starting & stopping their relationship over many years.

I really enjoyed the emotional layers for both Chris & Marissa. Their love blurs the lines of what is right and wrong. As their relationship progresses, it's clear that they both struggle with wanting to keep their connection but also wanting what is best for Marissa. She has the most to lose and Chris eventually is forced to see that.

There are things with Marissa's ease into the situation I wish were different, as well as the pacing towards the end as the story ties up how I'd hoped but wish we had a little more insight into some of the moments the timelines skip over.

From their first meeting, Chris & Marissa's chemistry and the tension between them is incredible. This story is filled with spice from the beginning and it adds to their connection in the best ways. It's hot, kinky, and everything I love in a workplace romance (hello office desk and I will never forget that taxi scene 🥵).

The performances by Connor Crais & Monique Ryerson is great. I do wish it was duet, I think that would've elevated the story a bit but they were both excellent.

I am now hooked on this world and will be going back to read the first two books in this interconnected series.
