Resumen del Editor

In 1844, two years before the Donner Party, the Stevens-Murphy company left Missouri to be the first wagons into California through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Mostly Irish Catholics, the party sought religious freedom and education in the mission-dominated land and enjoyed a safe journey - until October, when a heavy snowstorm forced difficult decisions. The first of many for young Mary Sullivan, newlywed Sarah Montgomery, the widow Ellen Murphy, and her pregnant sister-in-law Maolisa.

When the party separates in three directions, each risks losing those they love and faces the prospect of learning that adversity can destroy or redefine. Two women and four men go overland around Lake Tahoe, three men stay to guard the heaviest wagons - and the rest of the party, including eight women and 17 children, huddle in a makeshift cabin at the headwaters of the Yuba River waiting for rescue...or their deaths.

Award-winning author Jane Kirkpatrick plunges you deep into a landscape of challenge where fear and courage go hand in hand for a story of friendship, family, and hope that will remind you of what truly matters in times of trial.

Not as good as her other one but was interesting

I really enjoyed this book, loved that is based on true events, a story of heartbreak, forgiveness, sorrow, lost, starting over and finding peace and love. The author takes you away to another time when times were hard, lost was great and love meant something, when people looked after their neighbors and helped get through hard times. When family move on and may not see each other again. It was a breath taking story that touched my heart.

The narrator did a great job pulling the listener in, love her character voices, you always knew who was talking and what they were feeling. Her normal voice is lovely, it is a voice you don't get tired of listening to. There are no volume changes, no repeating of words and no background noises. It was truly a delightful listen that was very clear and enjoyable.

Sad but interesting

I didn't know these parties were stranded and starving before the Donner Party. How sad that the Donner Party didn't learn from this party's experiences. The narration was pleasant to listen to, and the story, although so very sad, was written in terms descriptive enough to be accurate while at the same time, not too gory. Sad and real, but so interesting.

Favorite author!

Love all of her books. The reader did a great job with all the accents. I really liked having the historical info at the end.

Excellent portrayal of the strength and fortitude of the early pioneers.

It’s hard to imagine today, and few of us could even attempt such abandon in search of a better life. Modern day folk are quite lazy!

Interesting.

I must say, this particular book of my beloved Author Jane Kirkpatrick did not have me listening in rapture. partly due to the narration. I do not like to speak I’ll of others but with that being said I found the narration so hard to get through. The narrator didn’t have much inflection difference with different characters. Most of the time I felt she had marbles in her mouth while speaking. I found her voice quite tiresome early one.
I’m not sorry I listened to the book, just thought it could have been done better.

Exciting History of Crossing to California

I love historical fiction that moves me- to feel the cold icy wind that can throw thoughts of despairing paralyzing fear into these pioneers, and still they conquered by one more day tenacity and group problem solving risks - this is a story that is the backstory of the 1840s pioneers to California. The author kept me cheering and reading on. Five stars!

Excellent Audiobook!

This is one of those rare historical fiction stories that is so well researched that it keeps alive the knowledge of a specific historical event that otherwise would have would been lost forever. It is told mostly through the perspective of the women but I would also recommend it for a man looking to learn more about life during this time in history. It is beautifully written and beautifully narrated.

I would rate this 14+. Not because of anything inappropriate but there is some talk of womanhood and the various things women might face during a journey like this. There is also a basic and very well written description of a mother giving birth.
