Resumen del Editor

A playful and moving book of essays by a "born storyteller" (Seattle Times) who invites us into the miraculous and transcendent moments of the everyday

When Brian Doyle passed away at the age of 60 after a bout with brain cancer, he left behind a cult-like following of devoted listeners who regard his writing as one of the best-kept secrets of the 21st century. Doyle writes with a delightful sense of wonder about the sanctity of everyday things, and about love and connection in all their forms: spiritual love, brotherly love, romantic love, and even the love of a nine-foot sturgeon.

At a moment when the world can sometimes feel darker than ever, Doyle's writing, which constantly evokes the humor and even bliss that life affords, is a balm. His essays manage to find, again and again, exquisite beauty in the quotidian, whether it's the awe of a child the first time she hears a river, or a husband's whiskers that a grieving widow misses seeing in her sink every morning.

Through Doyle's eyes, nothing is dull. David James Duncan sums up Doyle's sensibilities best in his introduction to the collection: "Brian Doyle lived the pleasure of bearing daily witness to quiet glories hidden in people, places and creatures of little or no size, renown, or commercial value, and he brought inimitably playful or soaring or aching or heartfelt language to his tellings."

A life's work, One Long River of Song invites listeners to experience joy and wonder in ordinary moments that become, under Doyle's rapturous and exuberant gaze, extraordinary.

Listen. With your heart and your mind. Listen.

Our book club read this book. I was late to the game so chose the Audible version. Oooo sweet blessing. I listened. And listened again. I laughed, I cried, I groaned - it is an interactive blessing of thoughts. Listen.

Essays by a Master Storyteller

This collection of essays pulled me in from the start and never let go. Brian Doyle has the Irish gift for telling true tales of the extraordinary shining right there in the everyday. His well-wrought words weave strands of wry humor and humility, faith and doubt, gratitude and wonder. The narrator was excellent, with a voice that brought the author's words to life with natural ease and grace. This book was a balm to listen to at the end of 2020 and start of 2021. I've already bought copies as gifts and will highly recommend this Audible version to others. My heartfelt thanks to Brian Doyle who left these words behind and to all those who labored to share them with a world that mightily needs them.

Never disappoints

I listened to the entirety of this audiobook from start to finish. The only thing I would want to change is that the audiobook version contain more than just numbers for the chapter headings.

This would make it easier to go back and dip in to the essays that made me laugh out loud or cry, or think more deeply about the topic at hand that I had ever done.

This physical and electronic book has already become one of my favorite gifts to the people that I love and admire.

I hope it inspires you with just as much desire to go forward with laughter, compassion, life force and perspective of this world as is possible. May it help your own tiny and potent position in this world to do as much good as one life allows.

I have loved the writings of Brian Doyle since I was introduced to him though Guideposts. This book is a treasure. I particularl

Brian Doyle tugged at your heartstrings with his words and his unique patterns in expressing his thoughts. He was lost to all of us far too soon. This book has been such a gift to revisit with this writer of magic and love. If you haven’t gotten to know Brian Doyle, I encourage yo to do so through this book.

A book only his best friends could love.

A list of things the dog chewed, endless rumination about the kids, wife, life…it’s like being stuck at an airport with a dull co-worker.
