Resumen del Editor

Has science confirmed what the Buddha already knew?

In this groundbreaking audiobook, neuropsychology professor Chris Niebauer explains how after decades of research on the brain, Western science may have inadvertently confirmed a fundamental tenet of Buddhism: anatta, or the doctrine of "no self".

Niebauer shows how findings in neuropsychology suggest that our sense of self is actually an illusion created by the left side of the brain and that it exists in the same way a mirage in the middle of the desert exists: as a thought rather than a thing. This incredible thesis has significant and wide-ranging implications in psychology, philosophy, religion, and personal growth.

Not content to merely detail how this radical new - yet ancient - perspective could change our view of the world and what it means to be human, Niebauer also offers a range of intriguing exercises at the end of each chapter that will allow you to experience this truth for yourself.

Listen to this audiobook, and you will never view "self-help" the same way again!

Must be considered

Finally someone has been able to explain coherently what I had experienced after years of meditation. this book has added much to my understanding of myself and others. I enjoyed how this author, an acedemic, moves beyond mere science near the end of the book. I think the scientific method is a great method but has its limitations.

Great explainer of non-duality for the left brain

I've been meditating for a good 8 years on and off really just for de-stressing and health reasons. I'm a pretty analytical person, athiest, science-oriented, very much "in my head." I remember hearing Sam Harris go on and on about the self and I thought, what's the point of all this? It made no sense. Then more recently I came across Angelo DiLullo and his explanations of non-duality were much more interesting to me and I went on a quest to educate myself much more about the subject. I feel like this book is a great "primer" in that regards. A lot of it was very familiar to me having already listened and watched a bunch of non-dual teachings in the last month or so. But I think this might be a good introduction for anyone who doesn't have any knowledge of the subject and is more science-oriented.

Neibauer, who I just now see has an active YouTube channel that I'll be subscribing to, introduces you to these topics from the context of the brain and it's division between left and right hemispheres and what their demondstrated functionalities seem to be. This isn't psuedoscientific junk, but actual science based on peopl who had their left and right hemispheres disconnected from each other, those who've had strokes or other damage to particular areas of the brain, etc. Sure, some of the ideas in the book are not scientific - they tread on the philosophical or even religious, such as that there's just one overarching conciousness (idealism) that is essentially playing a game with itself by hiding it's true nature in localised instances or portals of that conciousness we call humans. Still it's fascinating and something that I've decided at this point in my life I want to pursue more to see if I ever can get to a place of more "knowing" realization rather than simply my thoughts which certainly at this point understand many of these non-dual ideas and even can intellectually agree with them.

Great overview of the self question

I (both my left and right brain 😄) really liked this book. It summarises the most important issues with self, experiments pointing to a different understanding of it and alternative theories.

Fascinating and Accessible

Thoroughly enjoyed this as an accessible introduction to the latest science on the two hemispheres of the brain and alignment with eastern philosophy. Great for anyone interested in either of these topics!

exactly what a meditator needs to read

I've been meditating for quite a few years now off and on as things usually are.

I came across this book because I was looking for something to help me take things a little further. being scientific and an engineer in my normal working life I've always been a little bit curious on what science has to say about meditation. with that said I did understand that meditation is experienced experientially a few years ago even then this book help explained many aspects of meditation and mindfulness to me and I found it to be an incredible read.

Will Change Your Perspective

in a world where we are constantly bombarded by information, beliefs, thoughts, and endless information, this book offers a mind changing experience backed by scientific experimentation. Though the book focuses on Eastern Philosophy and its relation to the mechanics of the mind, this book will still be enjoyable and easy to follow for any audience.

Worth reading!

This is a good book that is worth listening to. Don't let the relatively short duration of the book stop you from buying it. If this is a topic that interests you, then you will be glad that you did.
