Drawing on dozens of intimate audio interviews with families from all across the country, award-winning psychologist and writer Andrew Solomon redefines what it means to be an “ideal family” in America today. Solomon observes that America, led in large part by the women’s, civil rights, and gay rights movements, has undergone a radical social shift in the last few decades.

While three-quarters of American children lived in families with two (first-time) married, heterosexual parents in the 1960s, today less than half do. The conventional family, Solomon argues, has broken into a multitude of perfect families, including gay families, multiparent families, adoptive families, foster families, families built through assisted reproduction, single parent-headed families, and child-free families. Although the structure of family has changed, economic and legal structures lag behind and need to adapt to accommodate this explosive new reality.

The stories are interesting. Sad, joyful, disturbing, and comforting all at the same time. As a "conservative" Christian who believes in "traditional family values," I was disappointed with the concluding chapter.

This book has an overall theme of inclusiveness and non-judgmental acceptance of others. I appreciate, respect, and totally agree with this. However, to conclude a wonderful exploration of family values by stereotyping family constructs of the past and present is bothersome. ALL "families" are made up of individuals who should be loved and respected regardless of the choices they make about the way they choose to live as long as they are not hurting others.

Difficult subject handled well.

Super informative and keeps your attention. It’s the best audible original I’ve listened to so far. Highly recommend in the changing times of family structures.

This was a beautifully executed exploration into the lives of families functioning outside of the socially accepted norms. Moving and deeply emotional. A great listen for anyone looking to expand their understanding of our changing society.

Struggled to pass through some chapters, but was quite educating, have made me appreciate my family and I also look forward to have a beautiful and Happy one. Nice narrator. Nice work all through. Though some parts were really creepy to me. I still respect everyone's values though some are really in sane. I have to just say that.

Everyone has totally different family values

I didn’t know what to expect when I first downloaded this audio series and I only chose it initially because one of the audible editors raved about it, but I’m so glad I did. This is one of the most interesting things I’ve ever listened to and I’m so glad Andrew Solomon is planning to write a book about this topic. I don’t think my view of family was too terribly limited before I listened to the series, but now my view has widened immensely and I’m so glad for it. I learned so much and want to tell everyone about it. Thank you Andrew and all who were involved for telling these honest, brave and sometimes heartbreaking stories.

Endlessly fascinating

I really enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the plural marriage presentation I feel it clears up many misconceptions. Child-free was also done well.
