Susan Wokoma performs in this teen-spirited and gangsta-rap-fuelled survival guide to growing up with an actual twat as a mum.
Written by Anoushka Warden, directed by Debbie Hannan and music by The Last Skeptik, this version was produced by Fight in the Dog and Showroom Productions for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019.
My Mum’s a Twat premiered at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2018. It was produced by Royal Court and Amy Powell Yeates.

Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

wow wow wow
It is really difficult to pull off this type of memoir without sounding maudlin, and self-pitying. the weird thing is she is full of self-pity, and anger, but you don't care because she is also full of spunk, and self-awareness, and understanding of her mother's vulnerability to the cult's influence. I just couldn't help rooting for for this young woman.

AWESOME!
I'm sorry your mom is, was & continues to be a twat. I love the happy ending of you having a good life although I know there are some periods of sadness. I wish, as I'm sure you do, that she had PREVAILED and DEFEATED that fucking fuck brainwashing centre. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ULTIMATE. You are a great writer with an EXCELLENT narrator choice. She brought your life to life(LoL). Continue and good luck.

Entertaining and great for a quick listen!
The narrator is great! The story is definitely worth listening to... especially if you needs something interesting and entertaining and have only about an hour to listen! 👍 Although the author (and narrator) are successful at making this story funny and entertaining, I can't help but feel a little angry towards the mother, and sad at the degeneration then ultimate loss of the mother-daughter relationship in the story.

Real angst...
We all remember the pre-teen and teenaged angst. Add to that a mom who joins a cult and you have this remarkable story that is performed amazingly! I could feel her pain, I could picture everything she described, and the use of language is so realistic. It is worth a listen.

Funny and painful.
I do not understand the previous reviewer’s complaint of “posturing “. Susan Wokoma is a black actress and British. She has a wonderful command of putting emotions in her reading. Amusing story with the sad undercurrent of feeling betrayed by her mother. Entertaining short story.

This is a good performance of a mostly boring story. I understand that it was a play. I the transition to audiobook lost some of the appeal.

Narrator made the story.
This story was good but the narrator was excellent. I can't imagine this story being half as good without the personality that was given through her acting. I do think it was ok on its own but may have been rather boring otherwise. The five stars is mainly bc of how Susan Wokoma acted this one out. :)
