What did you like best about this story?

These lectures enable any patient interested in understanding the process between physicians and their experiences - to communicate in a different way with medical professionals. This insight is invaluable. Enjoyment of the lectures, in part, comes from the case study story-telling approach. We can all relate to at least some of the patients in the stories. Medical knowledge is not a prerequisite. However with a little concentration anyone listening to these lectures will come away with knowledge that can change every encounter one has with doctors, and decisions.

What does Professor Roy Benaroch bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has an obvious passion for teaching and for the "mystery" of successfully solving every patients' condition. At times he presents with so much excitement it is like listening to a mystery novel. Yet, as most good fictional novels do, these non-fiction lectures, educate, almost without the listener realizing so.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I simply enjoyed it. I garnered tools to improve communications in the medical arena. Certain recountings were very sad - some rather thrilling! Yet the point was, if only there had been earlier, more mutual communicating... Lessons? Patients be honest. Physicians care and be curious and lives can be saved.

I spend time at Emory and know too many doctors frenetically working at Emory (and of course other facilities) who might want to spend some time back in the university, not teaching, but listening with the first year medical students to remember why they became doctors and how much they hold power to comfort or discourage, even fatally, every one of their patients.

Could save your life some day

The stories/cases are interesting but not great listen. However, what makes this book worthwhile is the description of how doctors make a diagnosis. After listening to this you will understand how the information you provide a doctor is critical in coming to the right conclusion. One of the key chapters was the woman who was sick, but neglected to tell her doctors she drank a bottle of gin every day, Eventually they figured out the truth and saved her life. Something you may not think of as relevant may be, and by telling your doctor it may save your life.

Informative - Well Presented

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Valuable information mostly about taking medical histories in the clinical environment. Will be listening to it again.

Really great!!!

As someone who feels maybe-interested in becoming a doctor, I really really enjoyed this audiobook. It was really interesting to be guided through the diagnosis process for a wide variety of cases. The narrator is great, too. I've listened to all 3 of the "Medical School for Everyone" audiobooks now, and I've really come to like Roy. He is so caring and informative. He's the kind of doctor I would want to be if I end up pursuing that career path.

Informative and enjoyable

Very interesting and informative content. The presentation was clear, and the doc's warm and caring attitude shown through the narration. I wish all my docs are like that.

my first 'great courses'

Fun an informative, well preformed and suspenseful at times. I found myself looking forward to the commute. the consistent length of the episodes was great and the writing was fantastic. I'll be a fan of the great courses for ever now.

Loved it. No matter what your situation is, if it sounds interesting to you it will be. Good dialogue too.

another fantastic Great Courses Lecture

This was a fascinating lecture on different illnesses and diseases found in everyday life. Even on the illnesses I have heard of before, I learned something new. The lecturer had a great voice and presented the cases well.

My toddler daughter prefers this over her music!

Hilariously YES: I was listening to this book while preparing breakfast. My wife and daughter entered the common area, and given she's only one year old, I figured she'd want to listen to her music. So, I turned off this book and switched to her well-loved kids' music. She started asked for "the man," which we eventually figured out as the author here, telling his story. And she's made the request on multiple days. Funniest part: she's still just shy of turning 2 years old!

Overall, I agree with the 4.6 rating given the book. It's very interesting--great stories within. We had a fourth-year MD student in the house while we were listening to this book; she really liked and identified strongly with the author.

Enjoyed

I work with medical terminology and this book helped me go further in depth with familiar terms. I would also recommend for anyone unfamiliar with "docspeak" who finds medicine fascinating. Written for everyone.
