Be Careful What You Tell Yourself

Jackie Baker likes to pretend. She pretends she's happily married to her handsome, successful husband. She pretends she's the perfect mother to her two beautiful children. She even pretends that her secret job as a phone-sex operator is noble and fulfilling.

But after years of pretending, Jackie's life is about to unravel. Her husband may be having an affair. Her mothering skills may be less than stellar, and her new client with the alluring voice is about to send her spiraling.

As the line between reality and fantasy begins to blur, Jackie Baker becomes trapped in a cycle of obsession and lies. Now, she either has to get her life back on track, or it will spin out of control forever.

Great Read

This story portrays the story of someone who is unable to express her feelings, and her behaviors aren't what you'd expect from a loving wife and mother, it has some unexpected twists and explores her psychological perception. I really enjoyed it!

What a tangled web we weave...

A great read! That "perfect" life Jackie leads straddles the line between reality and fantasy, and that line appears to blur more and more. The deeper she gets into her own little world the more unstable her reality gets.... until it hits her like a brick wall. Things are NEVER what they seem.
I listened to this while getting chores done. I found myself LOOKING for chores to do, so I could continue listening! Great way to pass the time and forget you are doing chores!

Could stop listening!!!

Great book...characters realy come to life and you can feel their emotion. Makes you stop to think about what the image of ourselves we show the world is compared to our real inner selves with all our insecurities and self doubts.

Thought provoking story, great performance

What made the experience of listening to Limerence the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed listening to the book being brought to life by the reader. I listened to it on an airplane and closed my eyes and the reader brought each character to life with different voices and inflections that kept me pulled in.

What other book might you compare Limerence to and why?

I don't have a particular book, but it was very interesting to travel inside Jackie's mind...

What about Catherine Hunter’s performance did you like?

She did the different voices *very* well. There were a number of accents required: Brittish, NY, little kids, male and female

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have loved to, but broke it up between a few plane rides on a recent trip.

Any additional comments?

It's always interesting to hear what goes on inside the mind of one who supposedly 'has it all' and it's a reminder that appearances can be deceiving. It's a well written story and leads readers into a world - phone sex - and psychological discourse that isn't run of the mill. It's a psychological thriller of sorts and it's well done. I learned a lot and was entertained. I certainly recommend this book.

Not recommended.

If you want to listen to a 33-year-old, stay at home mother of 2 complain and whine about how much she hates her privileged life and then literally goes crazy and is just shocked when she finds out a customer for her secret adult hotline telephone job turns out to be a 22-year-old kid using his father’s credit card and identity—- then by all means, this is the book for you. I had about 3 hours left and I just couldn’t stand her anymore. The story even tries to garner sympathy for her by throwing in some ridiculously timed family drama, but it didn’t work for me. I thought it would’ve at least been a lighthearted, juicy drama but it’s not. The summary is very appealing, but isn’t as interesting as it sounds at all.
