A fresh perspective on a beloved classic by acclaimed translators Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy.
German poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s (1875-1926) Letters to a Young Poet has been treasured for nearly a century. Rilke’s personal reflections on the vocation of writing and the experience of living urge an aspiring poet to look inward, while also offering sage wisdom on further issues including gender, solitude, and romantic love. Barrows and Macy’s translation extends this compilation of timeless advice and wisdom to a fresh generation of readers and listeners. With a new introduction and commentary, this edition places the letters in the context of today’s world and the unique challenges we face when seeking authenticity.

The text itself is indispensable for anyone on an artistic path. The advice that Rilke offers (at the young age of 27!) is as wise and poignant as his poems. I will buy a physical copy of the book at re read it often.
The narrator is superb - I couldn’t have been happier with the narration!
Excellent translation and performance

Patience is hard. My questions don’t want to wait. They want to be answered. My most impatient question is: when can we touch? My biggest question is: what ARE we going to do?
You’ve been on my mind in ways I can’t file neatly away. It scares me. It steadies me. It makes me feel alive and conflicted all at once. I tell myself it’s just flashes, harmless daydreams. But I know better. They come too easily now. Your hand in mine, the sound of your breath, you beside me in the morning light. As more time passes, it feels less like imagining, and more like remembering something that hasn’t happened yet.
Rilke teaches patience, or at least the wisdom of living the questions. I am trying. Mostly I am waiting with a hope that the universe will shuffle the chairs just right. Maybe I’ll find myself beside you, and it will feel easy, the way things sometimes do when they’re inevitable.
OK I’ve had a shame hangover since I wrote this. I know you can’t just hand me answers, and I don’t mean to be reckless. I’m not blind to boundaries or consequences. I just have feelings that are hard to keep inside. But I can keep keeping them inside. It’s OK to keep this in the margins. But I have to keep writing. Like Rilke said, writing (and creating) is not optional, it’s a necessity of the soul.
Patience

Wonderful!

There’s a bit of irony in censoring a writer and not allowing readers to form their own opinions in the name of protecting journalistic integrity.
With that said, Rilke still stands out despite the unnecessary edits. This was my first time reading any of his works and I already have a few nuggets to stew on.
Shame that whole passages are cut out
