#1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner returns with the 4th installment in her bestselling Frankie Elkin series, in which Frankie is called to Tucson, Arizona, to find a missing Afghan refugee, whose friend suspects she is in grave danger—before it is too late.

A young mother haunted by war, determined to make a fresh start. But sometimes, the sins of the past aren't so easy to escape.

Recent Afghan refugee Sabera Ahmadi was last seen exiting her place of work three weeks ago. The local police have yet to open a case, while her older, domineering husband seems unconcerned. Sabera's closest friend, however, is convinced Sabera would never willingly leave her three‑year old daughter. At her insistence, missing persons expert Frankie Elkin agrees to take up the search through the broiling streets of Tucson. Just in time for a video of the young mother to surface—showing her walking away from the scene of a brutal double murder.

Frankie quickly notes there's much more to the Ahmadi family than meets the eye. The father Isaad is a brilliant mathematician, Sabera a gifted linguist, and their little girl Zahra has an uncanny ability to remember anything she sees. Which given everything that has happened during the girl's short life, may be a terrible curse. When Isaad also disappears under mysterious circumstances and an attempt is made on Zahra's life, Frankie realizes she must quickly crack the code of this family's horrific past.

Someone is coming for the Ahmadis. And violence is clearly an option. When everything is on the line, how far would you go to protect the ones you love?

Frankie is about to find out.

I loved how she went into the Afghanistan life and culture. Since the end of the war I have wondered what happened to the people that were able to get out.

Very interesting, value information

First of all, I love Frankie Elkin. Her backstory is heartbreaking and she owns her character flaws. Secondly, Frankie has met some amazing people in her adventures and this book is no exception. I adored Bart’s gang of misfits and the lovable prodigal child, Zahra. And let’s not forget Petunia and Marge. As a fellow herper, I can appreciate their part in this story, albeit minor. The narration was great. Hilary Huber is one of my favorite performers. This book had it all — humor, heartbreak, mystery, and an ending that while a bit predictable, was still satisfying. I teared up, I laughed out loud, and even gasped audibly several times. I look forward to Frankie’s next misadventures and hope she gets the ending she deserves!

Memorable characters and great narration

I eagerly await for Lisa Gardner books o be released as I love her style of writing. This story again KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK

Excellent

I learned a bit more about the refugee process, which is very complicated. It gave me more empathy for their suffering. The camps are the stuff of nightmares. The mystery was full of twists and turns. Hillary Huber is one of my favorite book performers. Frankie, the main character is a terrific one. She is pushy, inquisitive and deeply empathetic while she searches for the missing. If I was the missing person, or someone I cared about was, I would want her on the case.

I've loved all Lisa Gardner books, especially the FrankiexElkin books, but this was terrible. So incredibly boring, and the narration of Frankie was awful. very disappointing

There was A LOT going on in this story. Without risk of spoiling it, somewhere along the lines Lisa lost the plot. It felt like spaghetti being thrown against the wall and putting everything into the story. When you think it’s over, here’s another rabbit pulled out the hat, and then another! And another! This is definitely a return for me.

Not my favorite…

This is definitely her best series yet, Frankie is such a lovable character who’s always getting into mischief while trying to help others. Unpredictable, exciting, not too graphic or sexual. The perfect series overall for mystery readers!

Love this series, it sucks you in instantly and keeps you there!

Enjoyed the story and it kept me hanging until the end. Would have liked a few more Tucson localities mentioned, but that’s just because I love Tucson!

Great story!
