A dark, gritty story, and a man forced to survive.

Well written book with a dark and gritty atmosphere. You can tell the author put a lot of time and effort into this 15 hour length audiobook.

A CUT above!

As a fan of both the author and the narrator, this was a real treat to listen to. I found the book supremely creative. It has all the fun game-lit elements, but a really unique setting and characters. A master class in world building. Dark subject matter too - pretty visceral at times. At other times, plenty of just plain viscera!
Joe Hempel's performance is tops. He disappears right into the story - something he's uniquely good at.
This one's a must for any fan of the genre.

This is not the sound booth version

That said it was pretty good I really enjoy Matt’s writing, this one is dark but if you are here odds are you are in to that sorta thing, it’s a lot less funny than dungeon crawl but it has its moments, except those moments are excruciating pain. Do your self a favor and listen to this on sound booth their production is much better, that said I’d love if they updated this version to that. Any way can’t wait for the next in the dungeon crawler Carl series.

This is a horror novel

I somehow missed any warnings about this book, if there were any, but this book is a horror novel. more than just sci-fi it is horror sci-fi. disturbing psychological horror. I wouldn't continue it if I didbt like Dominion of Blades so much. DoB was so good, but this is as disturbing as DoB is good, so its hard to take for me. if you like movies like Saw, you might like this book. I feel a little ambushed by this book, because DoB was so sweet, but whatevs, I'm not done with it and will probably keep going since I trust this author.

That was not what I was expecting!

I decided to listen to this because I had started the dungeon crawler Carl series by Matt and was absolutely loving it. This book is not that! This story is good. it's very deep, very captivating, extremely graphic. Reading this is like watching a train full of people slowly derail and you know they're all going to die suffering but you can't stop watching.

I don't even know what to say..... Good book but

Super DARK. Prepare yourself, you can't forget the things you will hear in this book. There's a lot to say but honestly you have to listen to understand.

Love Matt Dinniman, but holy S***

Love him as an author, devoured his other books, but this one was too much for me. I actually ended up returning it. Horror is one thing, torture porn is another, and I got nightmares after I read the first quarter of this book. It was interesting, which was why I got that far, but I honestly found myself googling what on earth is wrong with Matt Dinniman after I read the first part of it. If I was him, I would have published this under a pseudonym. maybe if all the torture and pain was saved for some final sequence where it was for some greater purpose, it would be OK, but that would make it a different story, and I don't want to read about people being tortured every other chapter in gruesome detail.

Too Much Torture For Me

Overall, I did not enjoy Kaiji Battlefield Surgeon but others might. The general premise is cool and honestly I'd be interested in actually playing the game that Dinniman came up with. In addition, the book is well written and the narration is well done. Despite all this, I wish I'd listened to something else. This book does not have the humor or hopeful tone of other books Dinniman has written like Dungeon Crawler Carl. There's no joy to be had in the beginning, middle, or end of the book. It's pretty depressing. Also. there's some graphic torture scenes that are honestly horrible. If you like that type of stuff, this is your book! However, it's certainly not for me and I wish I had never listened to it.

So Dark but entertaining. This is not discrept overly but wakes you to the world of dark people doing there desires online.
