Good advice

There are a number of insightful reviews on Amazon already that I agree with so I’ll not focus here on reiterating what they have already said, but will speak to some differentiators and this book in audio format.

I believe this audio book is thought provoking no matter what your communication style and offers good advice and self-reflective exercises for anyone who finds themselves on one end or the other of the lack of honesty in their communications or lack of empathy.

For those of us who primarily listen as opposed to read, it’s difficult to participate in the exercises which are one of the more helpful parts of the book. Although I believe there was an accompanying PDF for reference.

The reason I rated this as three stars (“I like it”) and not higher, is because 1) I found it very repetitive, 2) The narrator sounded like what I would expect a therapist to sound like. Her soothing voice that didn’t command attention made it hard to focus and she had the tone of someone trying to cajole, 3) While there were examples different scenarios between work and personal honesty and empathy they were both treated the same; I would very much have appreciated exploration of how they could differ, and 4) there are times when it’s ok not to be "your authentic tell-it-like-I-see-it self" if you feel that it helps the greater good. I felt as if the author was speaking to people who torture themselves for not being able to speak their mind. They hid who they are and suffer through that dishonesty, so his advice was to always be honest. I believe that it’s not always that black and white and it’s okay to “let go” of that torture and feel good about yourself in some scenarios that warrant bending your own truth. This book introduced no leeway for that.
