Acerca de esta escucha

Civil War veteran John Carter is transported to a dying planet, where he must elude capture by giant green barbarians to rescue a Martian princess from certain doom. In this landmark of science fiction, the myths and mystery of the red planet supply a vibrant backdrop for a swashbuckling epic.

Published in 1911, A Princess of Mars introduced a popular series of novels recounting John Carter's Martian exploits. Author Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the creator of Tarzan, employed a new style of writing that combined the genres of fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. His imaginative setting - an advanced but decaying civilization in which Olympian heroics play out against malevolent forces and ever-changing fortunes - endures as a timeless world, in which love, honor, and loyalty form the basis for fast-paced romantic adventures.

The Thok Whisperer
I can't believe I am going to say this, but Brick makes this a better book. I say that because I was once a Brick hater. I avoided his books for a couple of years. I think he has listened to all the criticism and has improved his work. This is my second review of this book at audible and the other narrator, I was not happy with. I have also read the book, but Brick is better.

THEY HAVE NO LAWYERS
I got a lot more out of the book this time and found it was a lot more complicated than I had originally thought. The world that Burroughs builds is exciting and creative. It had to be extremely exciting in the early 1900's. Yes, their is a lot of serendipity, things that just happen to go the way of the hero, things he over hears at the right time, etc. I would not let a modern writer get by with it, but this was a regular style of writing at the time.

I READ THE MIND OF YOUR DEAD MEN
There are a lot of different readings of this story and it is a classic. I would recommend this be the one you listen to.

I HAVE SPOKEN

WILD ANIMALS AND WILDER MEN

The book is MISSING important chapters Introduction/Epilogue narrated by John Carter's Nephew. The nephew tells the tale of his uncle John Carter who never seemed to age and was always away on mysterious adventures, but how he loved and admired him greatly on his rare visits. One day the nephew receives a letter and legal documents from his uncle naming him his heir with instructions on building a tomb which can be opened from the inside! Within the documents is also his uncles journal detailing his experience and adventure on Mars. He needs his nephew to put in place special arrangements because John Carter has finally figure out how to travel between Mars and Earth... I was trying to find this chapter to play for my son to peak his interest in reading the book; but it was not there! According to the internet there are different versions of this book which I had not known. My original copy from the Doubleday Book club was lost, so now I have to find that version again. I gave this only 3 stars because it is missing a this important chapter. Even the Disney movie from 2012 included this storyline. Because of the missing chapters I only gave this 3 stars because I was disappointed.

Missing Chapters by John Carters Nephew!

I was torn with this book. I have heard many great things about it and so I finally decided to give it a go. And in the end I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. It was a story that mostly kept me interested but now that it's done I don't really have an urge to read the next in the series. Maybe I will, but not now.

A decent story, just bot for me

It's hard to believe this book is over a 100 years old. While a more direct writing style than what you see today, this story is ahead of it's time. Yes it's Mars, but if you can suspend disbelief a little, you'll find a very enjoyable story.

And the reading by Scott Brick is fantastic.

Really Good!

The movie "John Carter" brought me here, and even more than the movie this book surprised and delighted me. It is alarming how often the most unsung books are the most heartwarming and cherished. A tale of a man finding his true calling, his true love, and most importantly, his true self in the most foreign of settings. With the direct and transparent language of a soldier, Burroughs takes the reader on an amazing sci-fi journey that rivals those of Jules Verne and C. S. Lewis. I hope with sincerity that this series one day gets its due in the annals of literary history. Hopefully the new owners of the Barsoom series' film rights will bring it to new fans like myself.

A Fantastic Voyage...

Scott Brick is the real star, though!

I've had this book in my Audible library for sometime, but just can't seem to get through it. The story itself is engaging, but it's the narration that holds me back.

Good story (I think)
