The next adventure in the High Republic begins expanding the new era of Star Wars, with a story set generations before Light of the Jedi.

It is an age of exploration. Jedi travel the galaxy, expanding their understanding of the Force and all the worlds and beings connected by it. Meanwhile, the Republic, led by its two chancellors, works to unite worlds in an ever-growing community among near and distant stars.

On the close-orbiting planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, the growing pains of a galaxy with limited resources but unlimited ambition are felt keenly. The two worlds’ hatred for each other has fueled half a decade of escalating conflict and now threatens to consume surrounding systems. The last hope for peace emerges when heirs from the planets’ royal families plan to marry.

Before lasting peace can be established, an assassination attempt targeting the couple tilts Eiram and E’ronoh back into all-out war. To save both worlds, Jedi Knight Gella Nattai volunteers to uncover the culprit, while Chancellor Kyong appoints her own son, Axel Greylark, to represent the Republic’s interests in the investigation.

But Axel’s deep distrust of the Jedi sparks against Gella’s faith in the Force. She’s never met such a puffed-up, privileged party boy, and he’s never met a more self-serious, relentless do-gooder. The harder they work to untangle the shadowy web of the investigation, the more complicated the conspiracy appears to be. With accusations flying and potential enemies in every shadow, the pair will have to work together to have any hope of bringing the truth to light and saving both worlds.

Meh

Overall this is the weakest installment in the High Republic series. This time around the YA Novel (Path of Deception) was way better than this. I guess it comes down to the strength and experience of the author in the SW canon. Its a good story but doesn’t leave you wanting more the way HR usually does. Marc is always at his best but really since there are no actual SW characters for him to voice, he wasn’t really needed.

Great story told through the voice of Marc Thompson. This story was well written full of adventures, action, love and suspense.

Absolutely fantastic full length book!

Such a good story, excellent job of making us feel for the characters, each character had depth and personality rather than simply being an lgbt+ prop. it is set in a highly interesting situation about and intrasystem civil war and Marc Thompson did a fantastic job as he always does! 10/10 can't wait for more!!

solid story

I'm very interested in seeing where this era goes. I like the subtle introduction of the beginnings of the Nihil. The writing felt off in comparison to the other high republic books, but I enjoyed this story and the characters

Slightly predictable… but SW often is

Thompson is always stellar. I listened to this after PATH OF DECEIT so I saw the story connected not only with the current arc but the first HIGH REPUBLIC. This is a PREQUEL to the stories that came out last year. Part of the predictability came for me NOT from repetition with SW themes—not an ABRAMS schlocky homage—but the ridiculous way that vengeance throughout human history always repeats the same tropes bc we do not learn.

The continued critique of the Jedi in these texts makes me wonder IF the Path of the Open Hand fits into the GREAT PLAN of the Bane’s SITH order.
