A Quick Summary of Irish Myth

This is a very short survey of the history and mythology of the Irish, starting in the mesolithic era (stone age) up through the middle ages to current day. The legend of the four migrations to Ireland ( Muintir Nemid -> Fir Bolg -> Tuatha Dé Danann -> Milesians) which most scholars believe was a convenient fiction invented by Irish Christians (who wrote about such legend … much like the christian skalds of Iceland) to link them to stories in the Old Testament (specially Noah). As such, it really doesn’t belong as “history” but it is still entertaining. I supposed this can be expected since there are no written records prior to the these storytellers of the middle ages. Once we do get such written records, the history provided is on firmer ground, if quite brief. The next two chapters quickly march up to modern times before returning to myths and legends that is presented in the form of a bestiary followed by a compendium of heroes (and some of the stories attached to each figure). For the most part this was interesting and fun … and brief (which pretty much describes most of the book) although it hardly qualifies as quality scholarship. Unfortunately the rather average narration does suffer from from an awkward pacing, but overall was still pretty decent.

The narration was decent for this genre.

The chapters and sections in this work are:
Introduction
Chapter 1: Prehistory Ireland
Chapter 2: Gaelic Ireland
Chapter 3: Ireland During the Middle Ages
Chapter 4: Ireland from the Rule of Henry VIII
Chapter 5: Irish Paganism
Chapter 6: Mythological Creatures
Chapter 7: Mythological Figures
Conclusion

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

All Facts

I found this audiobook dry and to the point. It was factual like listening to an encyclopedia. The myths were fascinating. I think having Irish music in the background would be delightful. Also the narrator having an Irish lilt would be better. I had no issues with Jack Nolan.

Interesting

This book kept my interest despite my lack of knowledge in history. I especially liked the descriptions of Irish monsters. The narrator has a slight Irish accent which added a little authenticity to the narration but it wasn't enough to make it hard to understand except for a few some pronunciation differences that took me a little while to figure out what the narrator was saying.

Nice intro text spoiled by poor narration

Okay, a double edged sword here. If I had read this, I would have liked it a lot better. While it's not a in-depth examination of Irish history and mythology, it definitely makes people want to know more and it's quite comprehensive in the amount of topics it covers. However, the narration was irritating at times with the faux Irish accent and the continual mispronunciation of Irish names got on my nerves at times. If you're not Irish, you probably won't notice (or care), but I do. I recommend the book as a starter for those interested in the topics in question though.

Makes me yearn for the old country

I have an Irish heritage that I am right proud of, and it is stories like these that fuel that fire on a fine soft evening. Herein lies the tales of old, to ears afresh that've never been told. These are the stories of our ancient ancestors, and you'll be all the better for it if you get this book and give it a listen. In the vein of the Humurs of Whiskey I've composed a song that reflects how this book made me feel after finishing it.

Come guess me this riddle, the tale that's a fiddle
What's deeper than oceans and wider than dreams
What sparks your imagination, a soul's sweet libation
Richer than gold and as gentle as streams

What can open minds wide, what can take us on rides
What's the key to wisdom and stories unknown
And what guided authors, their words like explorers
Sure wasn't it pages that writers and Jack Nolan have sown

So we'll turn to the parchment, the treasure imparted
For broadening horizons and solace it brings
And friends, let us ponder, from wonder to yonder
Do letters and wonders stem from the same springs

Wonderful book. Fantastic tales. It brings you home, even if you've never been there.
