Resumen del Editor

In an era of always-on devices, it’s difficult to totally disconnect from our jobs outside of work hours. But not doing so can cause long-term stress, burnout, and loss of the joy we find in work.

As a top tech leader, Bruce Daisley has seen up close how an around-the-clock work culture can lead employees to feel perpetually stressed-out, disengaged, and unhappy. In this workshop, Daisley lays out specific strategies to help us break free from the unhealthy work habits that lead to burnout and shows us that protecting our personal time can lead to more inspiration and more joy on the job.

Key takeaways:

  • Create and acknowledge boundaries: Adopt simple habits or tactics (like taking short breaks and switching off emails on certain nights) to disconnect from work momentarily and reenergize your mind
  • Be open about burnout: Have honest conversations with managers and teams about the effects of workplace stress and how best to address them
  • Lighten up with laughter: Laugh and have a good time with colleagues to release stress and feel connected to a larger group

About the mentor: Bruce Daisley is the former European vice president for Twitter and host of the UK’s number one business podcast, Eat Sleep Work Repeat. He is the best-selling author of Eat Sleep Work Repeat: 30 Hacks for Bringing Joy to Your Job, and his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Wired, Harvard Business Review, The Guardian, and The Daily Telegraph.

Living through the COVID-19 pandemic put the fleeting nature of human life front and center, and served as a turning point in the lives of millions. Radical shifts in social interactions and ways of working, along with the prevalence of illness and grief, motivated many to reassess their priorities. A staggering number of adult workers pivoted their careers or just plain left the workforce entirely, in a phenomenon that’s been coined The Great Resignation.

Good but basic

Easy listen but did not learn anything new, it’s all common sense like don’t read emails on the weekend, take vacations.

Exactly what I wanted, to the point, without fluff.

I needed something listen to that was quick and to the point about business to take a break from a +20 hour history book I’m getting close to wrapping up. This didn’t disappoint. Clear message, usable principles and got me to add the author’s book to my wish list.

Daisley’s short work did what the title promised!

At least I can say, “It did for me.” I listened to it last night, before I went to bed. I was a little anxious about my day and tomorrow. Listening to his words,I became more relaxed . Daisley shared some of his past problems and those of many other workers in their work places. For every problem, he gave a reasonable psychological explanation for the cause, that made me feel better about my hurt. Then he gave wonderful, simple suggestions for how to handle those problems. Ideas that would work for me at work, in public activities and at home. This morning, I am feeling “joy” about my day(s).

Too Basic

This is fine for an intro into burnout strictly from a work-based perspective. The examples and advice are good but with any reasonable prior knowledge of burnout or work life balance, would be considered pretty rudimentary. Burnout is not simply a result of the individual’s inability to manage stress and wrk life balance; that’s a very simplistic statement made. Perhaps part of the issue is that this narrative is coming from someone who does not indicate they understand or have even ever been burned out but as a leader who has mitigated burnout among others.

Simple but good

Nothing too ground breaking but it’s good tips on how to handle mental load a bit and a friendly reminder to calm down sometimes and not over work yourself cause it’s less productive overall.
