When architect and engineer JaiHonnah Chapman stepped on American soil again after being in Europe for many years, she didn’t expect to run into the Rock of Gibraltar, otherwise known as J Roderick Baylor. He’s drop-dead handsome, a former professional basketball icon, and has adorable twin five-year-old daughters. Regrettably, he is also her new boss. The Baylor Construction Company needs an architect who can keep up with the fast pace of a competitive industry. JaiHonnah is no novice in the high-stakes construction industry, but she must keep secret that her father is the head of BlackHawk Global, one of her new employer’s biggest competitors.

Baylor Construction is on the cutting edge of the building industry. J Roderick Baylor dreams of using his company to redevelop his economically challenged, crime-ridden, far northeast Washington, DC, neighborhood into a showplace. He knows that the tasks going forward will be difficult, but with the help of his best childhood friend, Ice, and seven members of their posse, the dream so long deferred will be realized. His gorgeous new architect, unknown to him, was the first runner-up in the Miss America contest, is the key to their success. As long as J Roderick can keep his hands off of her and keep BlackHawk Global from swooping in and attempting a hostile takeover of Baylor Construction, they can’t fail. Their entire community’s survival is at risk if they don’t succeed.

This series continues to impress with its ability to weave together the lives of so many different families and characters in a way that feels natural and engaging. Episode 8 is no exception—it’s like stepping into the heart of a sprawling, interconnected community where every storyline matters. The author does a fantastic job of reminding us how each character relates to the others, which makes the experience feel seamless rather than overwhelming.

One of the things I appreciate most about Alexandra Ward’s writing is the depth and continuity she brings to the narrative. Each episode builds on the previous ones, yet still manages to stand strong on its own. The relationships, the drama, and the quiet moments of reflection all combine to create a story that feels both intimate and expansive. It’s a rare treat to find a series that can balance so many threads without losing clarity or emotional impact.

And of course, Kelley Hazen’s narration elevates the entire experience. Her voice brings warmth and nuance to every character, making them feel distinct and alive. She captures the tone of the story perfectly, drawing you in and holding your attention from start to finish. This pairing of exceptional writing and outstanding narration is what keeps me coming back for more.

I totally enjoyed this book with good narration. I love all of the characters of the Montgomery and Alexander families. Love they are multi-cultural and all different fun, caring and loving families and have interesting friends. Even though long wait for this one couple of new characters enjoyed JaiHonnah and Baylor . Look forward to the next one. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you!
