very enjoyable

i enjoyed it on every level, unexpected twists and turns, with dark overtones.

absolutely loved this series

 Refreshing, and fresh idea 

I started this series while I was in the third book of the cycle of Arawn and after that dumpster fire of a series every aspect about this book was infinitely better storytelling the writing, the character development, the plot the power system etc.

And it wasn’t just necessarily better in contrast. It was an actual good book and series I would say, and I would recommend.

Wow! I just finished book 2 & 3.

As I read this series I was continually awed by the layer upon layer of connection between the main character's actions and his slowly revealing history (and future).

It was masterfully done! While not my favorite book, I have hardly been more impressed with a story so well weaved.

And the ending was perfect!

I say read the series. It is dark. The main character does many awful things--but in the end it all makes perfect sense. Each step in his story is purposeful and necessary.

Unhappy ending

I truly enjoyed the first two books in the series. this last one... I guess I just didn't appreciate the direction the author took with it. It was a strange and unsatisfying ending.

must pay attention

great story but it took a lot of effort to get through it all. I have a habit of listening while doing other tasks and if my attention drifted at all, I found I was totally lost in the story.

don't wait to read this one

I think the story isn't as strong here, although it does carry a similar mood and feel. the ending is good in my opinion. but the longer you wait to "read" it, the worse you'll feel about it. dive in directly after book 2 and you'll forgive a little sluggishness. I don't know why Amazon hasn't figured out auto capitalization the first word of a sentence when using swipe to text, but it's a pain.

The Broken Empire trilogy was incredible! you must read it! I hope this becomes a movie trilogy or television series someday!

Entire Adoration

What did you love best about Emperor of Thorns?

Everything. I absolutely adore this series, I love the character of Jorg and even more I love how Mark Lawrence continually move the story from current to 4 or 5 years ago. It entirely brings together the man he was and the man he is and why he makes the choices he does.

What other book might you compare Emperor of Thorns to and why?

I have few absolute favorite books in the fantasy genre that reach an epic status in my mind, definitely the king killer chronicles, blood song and the way of kings. I would say Mark Lawrences series also creates the epic feel of a world with its own customs and way of life, gods ands myths that my adored epic series do, however, because Jorg is largely the sole focus of the series and all other characters continuously only carrying minor roles, I think this book does slightly fall short in that. I almost wish Mark Lawrence would have had separate books for each of Jorgs years, but then I suppose to have lived even more years with Jorg, the ending would have been absolutely devastating. For the series he wrote and the length, the ending was perfectly chosen.

What does James Clamp bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

This narrator does an EXCELLENT job! I didn't even think twice about getting the audible book as opposed to reading it. He uses different voices/inflections for the different characters, even does a fantastic girl voice!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The antics of Jorg would continually make me chuckle and smile. Smile that he was so completely genius and brilliant in his scheming.

Any additional comments?

If you like slightly dark humour, blood shed, or just want a book to get so absorbed in that you lose yourself entirely. Get this series, get it, live it, love it. Mourn it once its over.

I've read a lot of the fantasy out there and this book really got to me

This Series Was A Ride.

Mark Lawrence takes you on a crazy ride through in this dark and gritty, post apocalyptic fantasy world he's created. The first person narrative was delivered extremely well. Time flash backs or jumps in memory show the protagonist's progression and understanding through all three books well and it gives you the full story.

James Clamp read it masterfully, really bringing the various characters to life with unique voices and speech patterns. The guy was phenomenal.
