Fascinating story

Fascinating story of the chess grandmaster who marked the end of human vs AI battle

Insightful beyond chess.

this book dives into our relationship with technology, and AI in particular. It speaks to themes of personal, as well as societal developments, and it sheds light on an interesting historical event.

If you like chess, AI, Technology, or even just the human condition, you will appreciate this book.

Good, but more chess than I expected

I find Garry Kasparov to be personally compelling; his personality came through even though he didn’t narrate the book. I enjoyed the book and found it thought provoking, even though there was more chess debrief than I expected. If I had purchased it with that expectation, I probably would have given 5 stars.

wonderful chess case study in ai

Gary Kasparov should have read this whole book, his introduction in his own voice is great. the main reader was a distraction from an excellent book. for a person studying AI this book is an excellent focused case study in one of the classic AI problems: chess. this may be more about Chess than a survey of AI technology, in part that is because the AI technology that is discussed in this book in a context of real chess AI history is not the popular deep learning or other machine learning type of system that most AI books exclusively talk about. I would say this book does give a good survey of historical AI technology for the case of chess, including notes that are very important for the history of computer science that are not often mentioned in other texts.

This is a Chess Book

Would you consider the audio edition of Deep Thinking to be better than the print version?

Interesting book, but mostly about the Chess...not Machine Intelligence. I'm not really a chess guy, but love some of Kasparov's other books on Russia, etc. Not what I was looking for, but a decent listen.

Though provoking, worthwhile

This is a thought provoking book, and worthwhile considering. It brings a smart human perspective to the question of AI and what that means for humanity, told by someone who wrestled with technology at the peak of human performance in his own sphere.
The only small criticism I have is the reader when he reads chess notation. If you don’t know anything about chess, you probably wouldn’t notice the errors, but if you do know something about chess, it is mildly distracting on the rare occasions when chess notation is discussed. He will read things like "Nxe4" as "N X E 4", rather than “Knight takes E4“. Small, but noticable.
Still highly recommended.

Well informed and interesting

I'm in the AI field. Most of what I read about it outside the academic and technical groups is, quite frankly, BS. Not Kasparov. He is (to me) surprisingly well-informed about the technical aspects of AI and Machine Learning and gives, among many other interesting things in the book, his point of view about the technology and its development. Great book!

Kasparov on Losing to Deep Mind

I was hungry for another book about chess (loved the book on Fischer/Spassky in the 1972 World Championship) on audio and there really isn't much available. So with a credit to use and nothing else I was interested in I gave this book a chance. It's now one of my favorite books. Kasparov goes into great detail of the match that brought us an AI that beat a world champion but it's much more than that. He honestly deals with his failure and the firestorm that followed the match giving his side of the story that to this day hasn't really been resolved. I was rooting for Deep Thought at the time but I have now revised my thinking. Kasparov is a modern day hero in my opinion who bravely took on an opponent that was not only a juggernaut of calculation but a machine built to do one thing: beat Kasparov by any means possible. The book is complete with lots of detail that chess lovers will enjoy while you listen to humanities last gasp to stay ahead of super computer calculating machines.
