Why I love this book

Here's why I love this book ... it has vomiting, bleeding, bones breaking, horrible smelling people, the stench of garbage and people losing control of their bowels about every 10 minutes. Couple that with a narrator who is acting so furiously, he is in danger of pulling an oblique. Oh, and demons, can't forget about that.

Like A Fantasy John Wick

Perhaps that's not the best description, but this is a tense tale of vengeance. It's certainly not for the faint of heart, but if that's your jam, you will most certainly enjoy this most excellent book.

Slow

Took some time getting going but then the gore started. The main character is indestructible and heals from life ending blows very fast. Was getting kinda old after the 3rd or 4th time. Vietor did an awesome job

Very good read!

This is a very good read and the voice for the book was perfect. It was so descriptive and allowed you to draw a very detailed world in your mind while listening. The only slight complaint was it was a little repetitive at times but it also comes with the territory of trying to be descriptive and start a completely new world.

This is not one of the best dark fantasy novels

I liked this enough to finish it, but I’m not going to read any sequels and I don’t recommend it.

The scenes and dialogue are almost all tropes. And unfortunately conversations repeat, so that more than once I wondered if I’d hit the skip backwards button by accident. It feels like the author wrote multiple versions of some scenes, then included all of them.

The author also seems to forget about the rules he established whenever it would be convenient. For example, at one point a character holds a knife to someone’s neck and threatens to gut them if they move - so that character freezes. The problem is that not only has the author made sure we know that that character can’t be killed by cutting their neck, the person holding the knife spent the entire previous night trying to kill them, presumably including slicing open their neck, so it makes no sense for either character to behave this way in this scene. Since that has some effect on the plot, it’s annoying.

For another example, the author makes it clear that one person is very important to the plot for a very specific reason, but then that person dies and the plot isn’t changed at all. What the heck, author.

Also the main character overcomes obstacles that are established as being too difficult for him to overcome in only one way: he gets angry. Despite the many paragraphs the author spends hyping up opponents and obstacles, there is nothing in this universe stronger than the main character. He’s a Mary Sue.

I like stories like Hellsing, where an unkillable monster rips though everything in his path and is justified in doing so. That’s basically what happens here.

For people interested in Dark Fantasy, I’d recommend instead Game of Thrones, Sabriel, or The Bone Witch.
