After eight years with her husband, Shalaine Brunson has reached her breaking point. Without a job, she knows her exit has to be strategic. However, before she can leave on her own, the decision is made for her. One traumatic event is all it takes for Shalaine to realize that the person she was married to wasn't who she thought he was. Becoming a single mother overnight is far from easy, but that's not the worst of the curveballs that are thrown at Shalaine. One of the changes in her life consists of moving to a less than desirable neighborhood. At first glance, her neighbors are far from her first choice, but are they as bad as she thinks?

When Simone Trent became pregnant at fifteen, she wanted nothing to do with being a mother. From the moment Truce was born, his grandparents were his parental figures. With an absent father and a deadbeat mother, Truce can't help but to have abandonment issues. For that very reason, he doesn't like to get close to people. Despite his trauma, Truce was raised right, and when he sees that his grandfather's new neighbor needs help, he doesn't hesitate. Trent soon finds out that Shalaine has him rethinking his hesitancy to become attached to people. They are both hesitant to act on their growing attraction to one another but soon, fighting it might not be possible.

Contains mature themes.

Carried Away was smooth, grounding, and deeply rooted in real-life experiences. It wasn’t the kind of story that loudly demands justice—it simply showed how complicated and unpredictable life can be for some people, and I appreciated that authenticity.
The story centers on Lainey, a technically single mother who is new to the neighborhood and determined to rebuild her life after her husband’s incarceration turns her world upside down. Despite everything, Lainey remains independent, innocent in spirit, and fiercely committed to creating a better future for herself and her children. Watching her push forward—even when the odds were stacked against her—made her incredibly easy to root for.
Enter Truce, whose grandfather lives on the same block. What begins as simple neighborly interactions gradually blossoms into a friendship and then something deeper. Their relationship develops at a steady yet satisfying pace, built on small favors, calming conversations, and meaningful moments with the kids. It never felt rushed—just natural.
Meanwhile, Lainey’s estranged husband complicates her path to freedom. Though he refuses to step up as a father, he’s quick to take offense when someone else does. Truce, however, shows up without being asked, forming a genuine bond not only with Lainey but also with her children. His laid-back, hardworking nature balances her strength perfectly.
Both characters bring emotional depth: Lainey struggles with the distance from her parents and a limited support system, while Truce reveals himself to be more than just a quiet provider—he’s intentional, loyal, and protective when it matters most. We also get a deeper look into Truce and why he moves the way he does. He has some clear mommy issues — their relationship is distant to the point where they barely speak — and you can tell that absence affected him. Thankfully, his grandfather stepped up and raised him, shaping him into the solid, dependable man Lainey and her kids come to rely on. But toward the end of the book, family secrets start creeping to the surface, and it’s obvious there’s more to his story than we know. That alone has me ready for the next book. A heartfelt, realistic romance about resilience, unexpected love, and finding stability when life tries to carry you away.
