When Sally Samuelson was eight years old, her golden boy brother Ellis went missing the summer he graduated high school. Beach read without romance

Starts off well but then becomes a Hallmark movie. The characters grow but rarely show much emotional depth. As a reader I just didn’t empathise. (Or care).
The exception and best writing of the book was around the character JD.

Family is Everything?

3.5 Stars. Interesting story of an Ordinary family living their lives and eventually coming full circle, back to each other and themselves

Breezy but not deep

For me, the characters didn’t grab me much, nor have they stayed with me. I want there to be more of an emotional catch with a story. This was a bit vanilla and flat for me. It’s as if none of the characters grew, they just became older versions of themselves.

3.75 stars rounded up for Bug Hollow. If you read the synopsis blurb you may think this book has more of a plot than it actually does. It begins with the oldest son, Ellis, in a family of 5 in the Santa Cruz mountains during the 70's who goes on senior trip and doesn't come home. Ellis who has always been the "good" son- reliable, athletic, hard working has gone off to a commune and hooked up with a girl and it's not clear if he will blow off college or come home in time. The mother, Cyb, a slightly cold and uptight woman is determined to retrieve her eldest, which you know from the back of the book, she actually does. And then what happens after is what you think this book is about. However, it's really much more of a character driven story about a dysfunctional family that launches itself off that one big event at the beginning. Nothing huge happens after this and I feel like readers should know that going in. These people grow up, grow old, some die, some go to college, some have affairs/addictions, etc. So, if you enjoy literary fiction particularly when it is about a messy Jewish family in the California hills during the 70's, you will probably love this. I enjoyed it but I felt the pacing was off. Every time the author switched character story lines, I had to mentally re-set. It was almost like a whole new book was beginning. I also didn't really care about any of the characters too much. There was one part in the book where we find the family dog dressed up as a baby in the bassinet - I wanted more of little moments like that. And so much less about who was going to which college.

A good steady book.

I enjoyed the story and narration. It held my interest until the end. It was a pleasant surprise.

Love the interwoven family stories

I love the truth in all the places and spaces. The story was so easy to consume and dialogue authentic. I’m glad I read it.
