Fun Horror

Any additional comments?

This is the type of horror that will speak to your silly side. These stories are more sci-fi than horror in my opinion, but they were fun nonetheless. If you like your horror with a serious dose of fantasy than you will love this book!!

a great comic-book anti-hero

What did you love best about Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger?

I loved its joy in grit and gore. It splashed all over the comic book in my mind. The choice of vocabulary and action was pulp-perfect.

What other book might you compare Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger to and why?

It reminded me a little of Lovecraft, a little of some of the 1930s-style Weird Tales, with a little Al Capone thrown in.

What does J. Scott Bennett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His narration was great for this genre. He grates really well.

Any additional comments?

(I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.)

I have never read Mr. Fortier before. I’ve never read pulp horror before. In fact, the only familiar thing about this is the narrator. I don’t know if he chooses these types of books because he likes them or if someone’s heard him before and just knows he’s the right narrator. Whatever the case, he is the right narrator for the dark and deranged.

Having opened myself up to new writers, new genres, I have frequently been disappointed by books that feel like they are merely the second draft on the road to something great, but someone (author, editor, publisher, etc.) decided that they wanted it out to the public before the story percolated into something avid readers would really appreciate. This set of stories is definitely not one of them.

This set of stories is thick enough to sink your teeth into and dark enough to blind you to anything else until you’ve finished it in its entirety.

Although for some looking for the cozy weirdness, you may have to pass this one by. It has gore. It has weird. It has shock factor. But all of that is the seasoning on top of a well-cooked steak.

Just ok for me.

What did you like best about Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger? What did you like least?

The individual stories were good but I thought the narration was lacking. Not enough personality infliction.

What other book might you compare Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger to and why?

Can't think of anything similar.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of J. Scott Bennett?

Someone who had better upper and lower tonal levels.

Was Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger worth the listening time?

Yes, it was.

Retro Awesomeness!

If you're into radio serials, golden age comics, penny dreadfuls and films like Zorro, this is the book for you! You can feel the love for old school adventure as you listen to this. The writing and narration are both excellent, while the characters and storylines are every bit as campy and fun as you'd expect.

Comic strip brought to life

This is an great audiobook that brings to life a character reminiscent of graphic comic books of the past. Somewhat of an antihero, Brother Bones' less than stellar origins are revealed in the first story and his avenging justice is unfurled in the subsequent tales. Each story, though individual in nature, builds depth and intricacy into the world of Brother Bones. The characters are bought to life by the narrators voice. His tone, pitch and intonation paints images in your minds eye of the characters and stories, just like reading the graphic strips in a comic book. With avenging spooks, human gorillas and demons this audiobook will keep you entertained. I received the audiobook at no cost and under no obligation

Origin of an antihero!

Nice to read the gritty origin of this avenging antihero and see his progression through six unique stories crossing aggressively into horror territory. Early on, Brother Bones shows up to execute murderers, displaying seeming omniscience, but later on, he's shown to conduct limited investigation in pursuit of his targets. Interestingly enough, instead of seeking to wipe out all evil-doers - and there's a lot - in Cape Noir, he only hunts on behalf of newly dead innocents. One failure on the part of the author is that he tells frequently of devastating injuries taken by Brother Bones - real, tangible injuries - which don't disable him - he is an undead zombie, after all - but he never shows how Brother Bones recuperates from said injuries. He's physical, not a ghost, and yet from one story to the next he appears whole and intact once more without revealing whether his wounds regenerate over time or heal instantaneously or what. Brother Bones is largely a mystery, while other characters are often the focus of the stories. In spite of the violant criminality prevalent in Cape Noir, the characters are frequently quite sympathetic: Brother Bones, himself; his assistant; Harry Beast; the gentleman thief, Temple Knight; etc. As for the narration, the voice took some getting used to, but was very good with distinguishable characters and accents. Looking forward to more adventures of Brother Bones!
