When I was four years old, my inept biological parents decided they wanted to summon a demon.
They planned to summon one and control him so they could gain riches. However, they didn't realize you can't control a demon, you can only enter into an agreement with them, and so their demon was able to walk out of the summoning circle that they didn't close properly.
They intended to summon a lesser demon, what they got was Abaddon the Destroyer, the angel of the abyss, king of the plagues, and all that evil stuff.
He took me back to hell with him and handed me over to Lucifer, who trained me to be a demon hunter.
I didn't have the swing set in the back yard, the toy box in the corner full of toys, a bicycle, or skateboard. I had daggers, knives, and books that list all demons and their powers, lessons to create pentagrams, sigils and wards, instructions on sending demons back to hell and maintaining a mind link with Lucifer.
They say a second war is coming. Most call it the second coming of our Father.
My name is Kastor Blackwood. I've been chosen to prevent that war.

The narrator did a very good job. I hope he narrates any future books in the series.
I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.
Start of a Very Different Series

I'm interested to see where this story will go next so I'll be looking for the next book as an ebook. This first book was great for setting the scene and introducing the main characters. Some mystery, some action and lots of character building, it's a good start to a hopefully interesting series.

The basis of the book was really great, I liked the majority of concepts and the world he created in his writing. I think the 2, yes 2, prologues were a bit much.. the repetition of how he came to be reared by Lucifer was a bit much. He could just make it one prologue and stick with it. The visuals are always appreciated when the author describes what is happening, never felt like it was too much info. The character had some development, but more would be nice.

I honestly could have done without most of it being jammed into one book, seems like 2-3 books in one. The main character suddenly finding out his powers, then mastering them in one go without knowing or doing this before. Mainly the teleporting power.. like he never imagined himself somewhere before, that's how he activates it.
Great bones, Bloated story

The book also has shade of the Sandman Slim series, as Blackwood works for the Devil, and is known to the demon princes for his tenacity and his real destiny. He has certain powers that he gets from his real father, and other skills that he gained as a result of being trained in hell since he was six years old. Blackwood isn't nearly as caustic, snarky, or rude as Stark, but he can get worked up from time to time.
The story is a little slow, and I take that to be the groundwork that is needed to be laid in order for us to get to the meat of the story, however, the meat is still a bite away since the book ends as the adventure is really about to begin. He finally knows who he is, and what he is meant to do, as well as where to start. Soa big warning, if you are looking for this to be all wrapped up in one go you are going to be disappointed. Because this does end on not so much of a cliffhanger, but more of a starting point for the action to begin.
I do like the cover, it conveys the occult and demonic aspects of the book at a glance, and makes no pretense to be other than what it is.
David Dear does the narration and does an excellent job. Every character has their own voice, and he paces the tale perfectly. He adds in Castor's rage, and you can feel the Devil simmering at times. Even Blackwood's partner is distinct and personable. Dear does credit to the tale, and carries it forward like a fireman hauling his firehose. I enjoyed his performance, but then I always do. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
