Resumen del Editor

Rejected at birth and raised in a village of tiefling misfits, Farideh expects a life without friends, love, or control over her destiny. Then she makes a pact with a devil named Lorcan, and everything changes. Lorcan promises all she ever dreamed of and asks for nothing in return. Her twin sister, Havilar, urges Farideh to resist the devil’s sway. But Farideh’s not so sure. Lorcan may be dangerous but the power he offers is exhilarating.

In the ruins of Neverwinter, Farideh’s doubts get tangled up in a devilish snare six layers deep. A succubus playing human pawns against an otherworldly foe sees the twins as obstacles in her path. And Lorcan’s monstrous sisters have their eyes on the city—and on Farideh. There’s no time to question her pact with Lorcan—it will take every ounce of Farideh’s newfound powers to get out of Neverwinter alive.

Great story of a Warlock

I really enjoyed this story. It was interested to see a character start out young and on the brink of adulthood setting out on an adventure. Really cool to see the intricacies of devil culture and how Warlocks go about making their pacts.

Only complaint would be there is no pause or shift when perspective shifts. You can pick up what happened shortly after but it does change really quickly if you're not paying close attention.

A wonderful story and performance.

After discovering the rarity of this book I was overjoyed to see it on here. An amazing story set in some of Faeruns most memorable past.

Enjoyable start to a series

This was a very enjoyable book. It has been quite sometime since I have picked up a Forgotten Realms title, and most of the past books I have read have all been Drizzt books. Erin M Evans did a good job of introducing the world and characters even to those who may not be as familiar with it as regular readers would be. I have already picked up the next few books in the series, and look forward to Farideh's and Havilar's adventures.

A definite hit for any Warlock!

I've been wanting to read this for over a year but never seem to finish. It was such a relief to hear the names instead of having to guess at them. It was well written and well performed. I personally love playing Tieflings in D&D and my first was a Warlock so I was super stoked when I found this story. I look forward to the rest of the series!

Great introduction to Erin M. Evans in FR

As someone who has read (or attempted to read) a lot of the novels based around Forgotten Realms, this series has been praised to no end, but it took me a long time to finally convince myself to dive into it. The premise of two tiefling teenagers in main roles and the plot of a young adult novel were discouraging signs for me, yet having finally received the inspiration to read through it, I was thoroughly impressed.

The two tieflings (and other main characters, like Lorcan or Rohini), however one note characters they may have seemed in the beginning, grew into more complex characters with every page as I learned more about them. The romance was mostly kept in the background (as far as the young adult novel part of romance goes), and what superceded it was instead the political machinations within Malbolge. Exquisite layers upon layers of devils trying to con each other over and over, to the point where admittedly the last few chapters could easily become hard to follow if you miss a correlation. All throughout I couldn't predict what would come next, which kept me gripped.

Overall I enjoyed the novel for many different reasons - the abovementioned character arcs and devilish webs of intrigue, the lighthearted humour and the constant running around, split from the rest of the group, as befitting a true dnd party...

There are of course, things that I am overlooking in the praise, such as the fact that this book may not be for all audiences, or the generic clichés this book uses (albeit subverting and developing some, to be sure) with its "Chosen Ones" in their teenage years taking on entire cults and surviving numerous onslaughts by the will of the writer rather than the writing, with characters conveniently stumbling into different characters' conflicts right as they begin, just to barely save the day, or recovering from wounds that are described as having formed literal pools of blood to fight with almost even odds against much more powerful entities... but I'm willing to overlook those indeed.

As for the narrator, I can give them pluses at least in the great narration of the dialogue. The tempo was quite slow, though at least understandable, and some of the voices (especially the higher up in the devil hierarchy you go) were understandably off. However, I wasn't much disappointed either - listened to worse in my life, and Mehen's growls grew on me through the novel. I won't mind listening to the narrator the rest of the series, but I'm hoping for some improvement.

So overall, far from perfect literature, but if a young adult dnd novel is what you're looking for, I wouldn't be hard pressed to say that this might be the best on the market. Definitely one of the finest Forgotten Realms books.

Great weaving

The plot tie ins were created beautifully and weaved perfectly together in the end. The overall story had great pacing that the narrator really brought to life, but was just a tiny bit predictable. Thank you for the great listen!
