Drawing strong comparisons to the work of James Lee Burke and Tony Hillerman, William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor mysteries never fail to please fans.
The Quetico-Superior Wilderness: more than two million acres of forest, white-water rapids, and uncharted islands on the Canadian/American border. Somewhere in the heart of this unforgiving territory, a young woman named Shiloh - a country-western singer at the height of her fame - has disappeared.
Her father arrives in Aurora, Minnesota, to hire former sheriff Cork O'Connor to find his daughter, and Cork joins a search party that includes an ex-con, two FBI agents, and a 10-year-old boy. Others are on Shiloh's trail as well - men hired not just to find her, but to kill her.
As the expedition ventures deeper into the wilderness, strangers descend on Aurora, threatening to spill blood on the town's snowy streets. Meanwhile, out on the Boundary Waters, winter falls hard. Cork's team of searchers loses contact with civilization, and like the brutal winds of a Minnesota blizzard, death - violent and sudden - stalks them.

When Shiloh’s father, Willie Raye, stops hearing from his daughter, he heads to the town of Aurora, Minnesota which borders the Ojibwe reservation. Raye hires former sheriff of Tamarack County Cork O’Connor who is part Irish and part Ojibwe to find her. Suddenly three FBI agents arrive at the sheriff’s office looking for Shiloh in connection to a murder she may have witnessed years ago. They work to convince Cork to include them in his investigation. They point to a tabloid offering a reward for finding Shiloh and figure Aurora will be inundated with searchers within days. Before Cork can do much, yet another man arrives in Aurora, this one owns a casino in Las Vegas and could be connected to that murder years ago. He claims to be Shiloh’s father and wants Cork to find her.
Shiloh’s guide, Wendell Two Knives, has disappeared, and he is the only one who knows where she is. When Cork visits Wendell’s nephew Stormy, they realize that his young son, Lewis, had accompanied Wendell on his trips to see Shiloh. Lewis cannot point to a map to locate her, but he knows the way. The FBI agents coerce Stormy and Lewis to agree to search. Cork mounts an expedition that includes Raye, Stormy and Lewis, and two of the FBI agents. While paddling through those still waters and walking the trails among the forests, it doesn’t take long for Cork to realize they are not the only ones looking for Shiloh.
Back in Aurora, yet another man claims to be Shiloh’s father. Cork’s wife Jo realizes things are not what they seem and involves the sheriff in this unfolding family drama. When bodies begin to emerge from the Boundary Waters, a taut search for a killer begins. What follows is a chase we never expected.
Author Krueger has turned a search for a missing woman into a gripping race for survival. Not only must the woman find her way to safety among the hidden dangers of the forest but among the men who would save her. The searchers become the hunted as they race to rescue the woman. Who will find refuge first? Narrator David Chandler paused a bit too often along the way but does manage to bring us to the exciting conclusion of this tense drama. Second in the Cork O’Connor mysteries, this far exceeds any sophomore effort.
Taut tale of search and rescue

This book has almost everything I look for in a thriller. I am white, but grew up on a native American reservation. There I was exposed to some indigenous spiritual beliefs. They were interesting then and I am fascinated by them now. I also saw, firsthand, what abject poverty looked like. Native American religions, much of which is based on helping one another and taking care of the Earth makes a whole lot more sense to me than any other religion I ever studied.
Ripping good stuff, I will read more!!
