A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

First responders run toward things the rest of us run away from.

What makes a person want to become a first responder? As in his bestselling book Unbroken Bonds of Battle, retired Marine Johnny Joey Jones didn’t have to look further than his closest family and friends to find frontline defenders—some he’s known since childhood, some he served with, and others have become friends and mentors. In this book, you will meet:

  • A game warden whose “miracle K-9” helped him save 22 lives in search and rescue missions
  • A firefighter who chose the job over a lucrative family career
  • A police officer who died placing his squad car between civilians and a drunk driver going the wrong way on the highway—and his sister, who responded by becoming a deputy
  • A border patrol medic working to save lives in the desert heat
  • A SWAT sniper describing how to handle a high-speed chase

One thing all these people have in common: none of them wants to be called a hero.

Their inspiring and unique stories are almost always overlooked when it comes to patriotic recognition of service and sacrifice. With vivid storytelling, Jones brings to life dramatic rescues, heart-wrenching losses, and awe-inspiring acts of courage. He delves deep into what drives these brave men and women, offering an intimate look at their personal and professional lives.

Behind the Badge will leave you moved, inspired, and reminded of the true meaning of heroism—because these first responders are hometown heroes at heart.

the book was interesting hearing all the stories. I did not care for Joey after each story giving his take. A lot of times he would repeat when they had already said

I liked this book. The truth behind the story-the lived experience of the individuals was very eye opening.

This book serves as a powerful reminder that none of us are truly alone. The fears, doubts, and struggles—whether real or perceived—are more common than we often admit. Mental health challenges are normal, and more importantly, they’re usually not permanent or beyond repair.

Behind the Badge reinforces a critical truth: it's okay to not be okay. Reaching out for help often takes far less strength and energy than the constant effort it takes to hide pain or keep it bottled up. Left unaddressed, that pain eventually leaks out—hurting people and affecting parts of our lives that had nothing to do with the original cause.

This is a book of honesty, hope, and the quiet strength it takes to heal. Highly recommended for anyone in uniform, current or retired—and everyone who supports them.

Well Done!!!

Joey shares stories of our first responders for DOD, HD, boarder defense, sheriff police, fire rescue and touching into dispatchers & EMT that all serve. Throughout the book, the interviewers stories highlight that they have to deal with a large helping of trauma and other stuff that John Q Public rarely sees. While there are rewarding times, filled with adrenaline at various stops along the way, it takes a pointed effort to deal the spotlight the city puts on you even went off duty, trauma, compartmentalized emotions, and in times PTSD and alcoholism. Everyone must find a way to deal with the good, bad and the ugly.

as a veteran and retired law enforcement officer. this book should be gifted to spouse s to help them understand why their loved one does not always share. The need to protect the innocent requires silence at times! God Bless America and all our Defenders!

An important book that approaches the vocal and ongoing assault to our brave men and women by calmly and quietly providing a view of the work through the eyes of our military and first responders. Thought provoking and humbling to glimpse what is behind our American safety net. Thank you for the telling.
