On one dark and windy night, Ozzy steps out of bed, jumps out his window, and walks straight into the ocean. It's as if someone is controlling Ozzy's mind. He's saved by Sigi - Rin's daughter - and Clark, a mechanical robot bird. More than ever, Ozzy could really use the services of Rin, the Wizard for Hire.

When a mysterious package arrives in the mail containing a plane ticket and a thumb drive, Ozzy is certain it's from Rin. But when Ozzy, Sigi, and Clark arrive in New York, Rin isn't there. Instead they are met by the man who was the money behind the mind-controlling "discipline serum" created by Ozzy's parents. Ozzy was the final test case and is now the key to discovering the serum's secret. He is a very valuable boy. Once again, he's on the run.

As fate would have it, Rin appears just in time. But Rin's goal is more than a rescue mission. He needs an apprentice to cement his status and notoriety in the magical realm of Quarfelt - assuming the place even exists. As Rin's apprentice, Ozzy must complete five tasks to receive the Gift of Wonder. Ozzy is willing to help, but is now really the best time to enter a contest for wizards when something is controlling his mind? Especially when someone is out to destroy the people he loves?

Finished the first and second. Lovely books, all 5 star with a 4 star on performance cause the yelling is a bit loud for listening. Love the whole and the narration is lovely as well! Highly recommend.

I like this series

the series is wonderfully odd. It constantly seems like Rin is just a conman with a couple screws loose, but there's just enough doubt around every corner, and the fact this is Obert Skye writing, that makes it believable enough to wonder. it's not perfect, lots of convenience in terms of progressing plot, but that's kind of part of the story itself.

Also, I don't get the complaints about the yelling. I've never had to adjust my volume for this reader and this is the second or third series I've listened to with him. His narration is almost synonymous with YA novels for me.

Kirby Heybourne is great, odd but charming series

I can appreciate what the narrator is trying to do with the yelling when the characters yell but it can be a little much at times. with that being said, I enjoy these books

Oh my goodness, we absolutely loved this book! The first book was great even with all the cringe worthy moments that Ozzy had learning normal social conventions. The mystery continues in this sequel as Ozzy is being hunted by Charles's partner Ray and searching for Rin. The crazy coincidences continue while Rin insists that Ozzy is his apprentice and has 5 tasks he must complete and Ozzy is left to continue to question Rin's sanity or wizard abilities. My kids (10, 13, 15 year old) listened with me and we all love this book especially Rin's off the wall sayings like " Love is the soul giggling. " This is more of a realistic fiction than a true fantasy in style which definitely makes it more interesting. It's a clean read and I would place it as a 3rd grade and up read-- adults will enjoy it too.

The narrator does a fantastic job as always, really can't go wrong with Kirby! He does such a great job with the acting and voices.

"Love is the Soul Giggling"- Rin

I wasn't convinced that this series was going to be great after the first book, but after finishing this second one, I'm fully invested in the story and am eager to move on to the third book.

Now I'm invested

Better than the first one by far. I love Kirby Heyborn’s narration! His voice changes and inflections make for an interesting listen.

The story is good, you actually waiting to see what happens next but the narrator is ruining the experience. Someone needs to tell him he doesn’t need to yell when the characters yelling, it’s really annoying and takes all the fun out of the story.

Good story, narrator not so much
