Great Series

Another fun mystery with Dr. Nell Ward. I enjoyed learning about adders, reptiles and night jars.

Excellent narration , characters exhaust me.

The continuing themes of “does he love me?” “am I good enough” “oh, I feel so guilty” are exhausting. They are at odds with the clever and intelligent competence of our main character, yet she keeps dragging her self down in those themes. Also, the bit about giving us glimpses into the mind of the perpetrator, cleverly using only pronouns, so we have to keep guessing, becomes tedious. That said, I feel like each of the characters were left in a strong place at the end of this one, and hope that they can move forward, solving the mystery and crimes, and not whingeing about themselves.

Excellent voice acting! Characters, emotions, accents, inflections.

The story is pretty good, lots of lovely red herrings and dead ends and scary moments. Nell is leaning into her title more, which is interesting. She's a good heroine - worldly, confident, skilled, resourceful, rational, mentally tough. Also this book was blessedly free of the girly teen paroxysms of insecurity. However, it committed a worse sin against female rational conduct. SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD

So why would she make such a spectacularly boneheaded move? (If you finished the book, you know what I'm referring to.) That was just stupendously stupid. And telling no one compounded the idiocy. I also found her secret signal eye-rolling in its unlikeliness. She had mere moments to devise this incredibly obscure reference, communicated by means of such ambiguous signaling.

Still over all, it was a good read. But dead Author, please stop making her stupid.

You need to hear this narrator!

The narrator is wonderful! She produces realistic characterizations that ignite both your interest and intellect. Her representations of both male and female voices are so good that the listener is entirely sucked into the story and not irritated by the occasional shortcomings of a voice actor. She has thoroughly prepared each character - timbre, emotion,weight and lilt! I’m hooked. Well done!

Love the ecology science lessons

Yarwood-Lovett has a perfect blend of mystery, romance, and a science lesson in her books. I love hearing the ecology behind the setting while reading the book and at the end. Her passion for the earth is evident.
