Acerca de esta escucha

A body in the swimming pool, a disappearing suspect and a killer hiding in plain sight…

When mystery novelist turned private detective, Marius Quin, is invited to speak at a gala dinner by the mysterious Mrs Thistlethwaite he jumps at the chance of a weekend away on the English Riviera. With his sleuthing partner, Lady Bella Montague, in tow, Marius arrives at Torquay’s Grand Hotel. But they soon realise that, behind the shiny exteriors, all is not what it seems. After Thistlethwaite turns Marius’s big night into a character assassination at his expense, he wonders why he was invited in the first place.

Things go from bad to worse when Marius discovers the body of his cantankerous host in the hotel pool. But how can the duo catch a killer when every piece of evidence they uncover is contradicted by two more? Faced with a hostile police sergeant, evasive witnesses and a conspiracy to conceal the truth, Bella and Marius must call upon every resource they possess to uncover the secret of the body at the Grand Hotel.

A charming, cozy whodunit. If you adore Agatha Christie, T E Kinsey and Lee Strauss you’ll be hooked on this historical mystery.

I enjoyed this 4th book in the series. Marius is highlighted as a mystery writer and then must solve a real murder. Bella helps with her high class talents. This time, her boyfriend wasn't around to mix up Marius.
The wrong person is murdered at the hotel! Other people are acting strange. Marius' dog gets spa treatment and a copper's name is Valentine! Yes! You can see why it takes our guy to solve it all!
Again the author notes by Benedict Brown are as good as the story. Read them!!

Marius the author is challenged!

Based on the reviews, I was anticipating a cliffhanger. And certainly got one! So very much looking forward to the next installment. I thoroughly enjoyed it and liked the bit of overlap between this and Lord Edgington. The whodunnit was not difficult to determine or a surprise like in the other books, however, the unraveling of the plot was engaging. I do like how Benedict Brown immerse you in period details. It’s like you are there along with the characters; able to see and experience everything. A shout out to the narrator who does an excellent job! He brings the book to life.

Can’t wait for the next one!

I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the history, as well as the mystery itself. Benedict Brown continues to charm us.

Unexpected Ending.

Enjoyed this book as with the previous books in the same series. Good story, with a great narrator. The ending scene left a cliffhanger, and I cannot wait for the next book.

P/s is Inspector Lovebrooke getting his own series? The author seemed to be hinting that Inspector had a complicated background, and through this series been dropping info bits about him. I do hope to see one with Valentine Lovebrooke as main character.

Great narration

Oh heavens !! Another great book from Benedict Brown! I only have one suggestion for the future, please never, never, never give another "cantankerous local" with a name like hers (I won't even try to spell it!) ! LOL. EVERY SINGLE time the narrator said it I tried to say it in my head !! Unfortunately I "said" it differently ever time 😃. It was exhausting. LOL!

Mrs. ? LOL!

Loved it! You shocked me beginning to end. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Thank you for a stunner!

I enjoyed the train ride and then the weird reception the author uncounted at the hotel and then chain of events that happened after his supposed presentation/lecture.

Slander the detective/author

The plants in the audience were horrid to Marius when he gave his talk but he persisted throughout the talk and the whole book with his usual efforts at courtesy. The tension between Marius and Bella is very tender. I think.
I continue to love how BB runs the inner thoughts of Marius as an underlayment to his actual conversations. A way to peer into Marius’ deep thoughts.
Thank you for the afterwords, too, fascinating.

Unpleasant characters and an impossible name.
