I grew up in Cardiff, South Wales, and though I have lived in London for many years now, the mountains and coasts of Wales still fill my imagination, and are some of my favourite places in the world. After a varied decade or so of studying (history and anthropology), teaching, and working for an NGO and for the British Council, I started to write for children and young adults in 2005. My fantasy trilogy, Assalay, was published in Germany in 2009-11 by Erika Klopp Verlag, and its three volumes (A Fragment of Moonswood, The Singing War and Weatherlord) are now available in self published English editions, both in paperback and ebook formats. My UK debut Silence is Also a Lie (formerly Night of the Party) is a YA love story and political thriller, set in a near future, dystopian England. It's published by Scholastic UK, and received enthusiastic reviews in The Guardian, The Sunday Times, and the Irish Times where it was selected as a YA title of the year for 2018. It won the Bristol Teen Book Award 2019, was shortlisted for the SCBWI Crystal Kite and the Great Reads Award, and was selected as a 2019 White Raven. As well as novels, I write song lyrics and performance pieces for children, as writer in residence at the Da Capo music foundation.
